Samantha left the bridge and made her way to her new quarters. All of her stuff had been sent over and her living room was now stacked with boxes. Most of them were books. She’d asked for two large bookshelves, one in her quarters for her personal books, one in her office for work-related books.
One by one, Sam gently took the books out of the boxes and placed them on the large bookshelf. Each book had a memory and a story: where it came from, when she found it, or how it affected her.
As she worked, the computer played Andean folk music in the background. Sam hummed along as she finished unpacking her books and then began on her paintings. Machu Picchu, Tiuanaco, Mount Illimani, Stonehenge, and Palenque. Some of her favorite ancient sites and the mountain that graced the horizon in her beloved Bolivia.
The rest of her belongings were minimal: a couple of musical instruments, a large alpaca blanket, wooden bookends of a cholo and chola (a Native American couple), and a few assorted knick-knacks. They were quickly placed around her quarters. When she was done, she sat on the deep red sofa and smiled. NOW it felt like home. She replicated two empanadas and a glass of milk and ate a quick lunch before heading down to the science lab to start setting that to rights.
