Not So Friendly Welcome

504 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Transitions
Location: Engineering

Karma had heard there was a new engineer on the ship and decided to go pay her a visit. He stepped through the doors to engineering and paused. He wasn't sure where to find her and didn't want to interrupt anyone so he just waited to see if anyone would actually acknowledge him, which he doubted since he was wearing his greys.

A Bajoran woman was standing next to a human male that was easily identifiable as Ens Gonzales, mainly because of his height. At 5'5, he was very short for a man of any species.

Gonzales left and the Bajoran looked up and frowned; she had noticed the intelligence officer, but from the look on her face, didn't like that he was here. She was walking over to him now. The junior lieutenant pip on her collar was obviously new because it was so much shinier than the other one, but that didn't stop her from walking with a strong and purposeful stride. She was clearly confident enough to run her engineroom. Or was it overconfidence?

The blonde stopped in front of Karma. "Can I help you?" Her ridged nose wrinkled a little more at the bridge as she frowned at him.

"I'm looking for Lieutenant Kalyka," Karma replied.

She raised an eyebrow. "That's me. What do you need? We're rather busy running through the checklist and making sure everything works right. In truth, the engineroom was a little sluggish. She just didn't like spooks and generally avoided them as a rule.

"I just wanted to come by and introduce myself," Karma replied. "I enjoy meeting new people."

Kalyka eyed him. She still didn't trust spooks. "Hello then. I'm a little busy, but if you'd like to come back later that would be fine." She hoped he'd get the idea.

Karma knew that tone. "Did I do something wrong?" he asked her, though he knew the answer.

"No, I'm just a little busy is all. I have to meet all the engineers and get everything checked before we launch next week. If the shields fail on us, they're going to blame me, not tactical." She kept a smile on her face, trying to stay friendly, yet not friendly.

"I understand," Karma said to her. "Thank you for your time." Without waiting for a reply, he turned and walked out of the room.

The smile slid off Kalyka's face like oil. Finally she realized what she had been doing. She stood there, staring after the guy until someone brought something else to her attention. But he was on her mind for the rest of the day.

'Treat everyone like a friend,' her father had always told her, 'you never know when you may need them, or when they may need you. People have feelings, and deserve to be treated with respect. Remember that, Meral.' She'd find him and make it up to him. She had to.
