Prelude: Blowing away the Cobwebs
Location: CSO's Temporary Office
Timeline: Day befor boarding the Orion
Alex walked through Jupiter station, waving at passing crew. She was going to see the new Chief of Science in her office, and had a little bit of trouble finding it. It was pretty easy when she reached the science section though. She walked up to the door and rang the chime.
Sam was making notes on a PADD, trying to get everything organized. When she heard her door chime she set the PADD down. "Come in," she called.
Alex entered with a soft smile crossing her beautiful face. Her gestures and vibe said that she was overjoyed by the experience of meeting the woman before her. "Hi. I'm Lieutenant Adeyemon. The Orion's new Chief Engineer." She said as the doors closed behind her.
Sam stood and offered the woman her hand. "Hi. I'm Samantha York, Chief Science Officer. Nice to meet you."
"You too." Alex replied. "I just wanted to get a chance to me the people I'll be working closely with before I get too busy with these refits."
Sam grinned. "I like to do that, too. But, as I just got here, I'm trying to figure out what needs to be done on the Orion before they get too many renovations finished. At least I have the opportunity to make a few changes while we're in drydock."
"You should probably just talk to me about them. I'll be taking control of the refit tomorrow." Alex replied.
The smile on Sam's face grew. "Excellent! What I want to do is put the botany lab directly below the main science lab and have a 10-meter square hole in the deck plating between the two. That will allow the botanists to grow trees for research purposes." She paused to let that sink in. "There are trees in the arboretum, but they are for the crew to enjoy. These trees would be for the botanists. We put a meter and a half railing around the hole and a pole down the middle to tether the trees if necessary, and we have the perfect spot. The botanists can check the roots and trunk from the botany lab and the leaves and tops from the main lab. It also looks great to walk into the main lab and see trees growing out of the floor," she chuckled.
"That sounds interesting." She smiled. "I love nature as much as the next girl, but plants aren't really my think. I'd be glad to have the refit teams reroute those power conduits that run between those two areas."
"Thanks. I appreciate it," Sam said with a smile. "Once the lab is set up, I'd like to add a secondary computer system with its own backup power. Sometimes we have to run long-term experiments. Once in a while a loss of power can cause -- catastrophic accidents. This will keep them running even if the ship loses power. It'll also let me add additional security to the secondary system. I hope that's okay with you."
"Perfectly fine..." Alex stood with a smile. "It was nice to meet you, Lieutenant."
"It was nice to meet you, too. And I appreciate your help," Sam replied.
"Anytime. Bye." She turned on her heal and walked out of the office.
