Mission: What Lies Beneath?
Location: Tiberius IV
Timeline: Current

Sam decided it would be more efficacious for her to stay in the pod and work on analyzing the sand than for her to lead the group back to investigate the sand and the strong possibility that the two missing ships sank beneath the surface.

So, she put Karma in charge of the investigation and told him to get a group together to leave within the hour.

====

Lizzie had gone over the analysis of the sand before she joined the group heading back to the surface of the planet. She was both nervous and excited. It wasn't often she got to go on an away mission.

Trent was much less enthusiastic about going back into the sand than Lizzie was. He had just finished dusting himself off when he got the call to go out again. With his head dropped to the ground in dismay he began wrapping himself back up to head into the storm.

“An ice planet and now a desert planet...I’m due for a tropical paradise next.†He grumbled to himself as he hefted his weapon over his shoulder.

Kara had come in just behind him. "Suck it up, Marine. It's part of the job description. I'd much rather be on a desert planet than an ice one." She set down her pack and waited for the rest of the team to arrive.

Trent huffed in agreement at the Sergeant's comment. "Marginally better, made only that way by the lack of those damn rats." He almost spat at the mention of them.

"Rats, frozen ground, no food. Here we have heat, no food and some sort of eel -- if you were paying attention," Kara scoffed. "Both hostile, but I'd rather not freeze to death."

"Well, we at least knew those rats were hostile." He said recalling the intense battle in the caves. "We have no reason to believe the eels are the same. For all we know they could be this planets version of a cute n' cuddly critter."

'I doubt they're cuddly,' Kara replied, 'But they didn't attack us, either, so you may be right about their intentions." She could give him that much. The eel, or whatever it was, only attacked the firefly.

Karma walked over to the group and looked around. "We're about ready to go look for the ships." He looked Trent and said, "I'd like for you and Kara to get a small team together and get your gear ready."

Kara raised an eyebrow at the request. "I'll be happy to get a group together." She turned to Trent. "Private, you get the gear together."

Trent smirked at the Starfleet officer for a moment before looking back to his superior. "Yes Sir." He said shaking his head. He turned quickly and began relieving the storage racks of the necessary equipment.

Karma turned to the others and said, "Lizzie and Leanne, I'd like you to go with us as well." He looked around and spotted Kaj. Karma walked over to him and said, "The choice is yours if you want to go with us or stay here with the others."

Kaj looked at Christian before answering. In the interim his shoulder had spontaneously popped back into joint, but it still hurt and now was stiff as well, hence the wince as he got up to address Karma
"I've had enough dirtside adventure for one day, I say transport or get a shuttle down here to quickly evac the wounded. I can get to the bay and prep the other Firefly and the gunship to come down here without crashing."

"That's understandable," Karma said to Kaj. "I'm sure the other Firefly will be useful when we find out what happened to the other ships. I see no reason the Commander wouldn't agree to evac you and the others."

Kaj nodded in agreement, then looked over at Sam.
"Whadda ya say skipper, think we can at least get transporters to work through the grit out there?

"Not until the storm eases or disperses. No telling how long that will take," Sam said.

Kaj had been prepared for this with his own analysis.
"I understand skipper, but if we don't hang around a shuttle could get the injured out of here if the sand interferes with transporters."

"I'm staying on the pod. I'll continue to work on finding a way to scan through the sand. We'll also keep trying to raise the Orion," Sam said. "Since we can't communicate with them, they probably can't communicate with us, either. At least for now. They won't be able to scan us, either. So we probably have a few hours before they come looking for us."

Karma looked around the group once again and finally spotted Del'ore. Walking over to stand next to her he said, "Lieutenant, you may want to come with us. When we find the ships you may want to help determine what happened."

"My place will be here with the commander, I have a great deal of raw data to share." Del'ore handed Sam her Padd. "Perhaps you can review this for me Commander and tell me what you think."

Kara came back with four Marines and nodded to Karma. "We're all set."

"Good work, Sergeant," Karma said to her. "Send a few of your men out ahead of us so we don't have any more surprises and we'll follow them."

"Yes, sir," Kara said. "Kushner, you, Scott and McCarthy head out first. I'll follow with the others."

Trent nodded as he pulled on his weapons shoulder strap until it was strung comfortably on his shoulder. "I'll take point if it's all the same. If I'm going to get sand blasted I may as well go all out." He quickly checked his weapon before moving to the front of the group. "We set?" He asked the Sergeant.

Kara looked at Karma for confirmation, then nodded. "All set. We'll follow you shortly."

"I want to keep them 40 to 50 meters ahead of us," Karma said. "We can leave when they're in position."

Trent walked up to one of the large doors on the side of the pod and stood in front of it. He lifted his weapon and checked it over along with the rest of his gear one last time. "Here we go again." He said to no one as he pulled up his face guard and fit his sunglasses snug to his head. With one final sigh, he toggled the door controls and stood ready to face the sand once more.
