1,922 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Eye of the Storm
Location: Newmark quarters.

ON

Newmark woke rather early; he could not really sleep comfortably, getting just enough to be thought of as rest. He moved slower and making sure he did not disturb the Sleeping Nhallia. He got up and quickly got ready for duty. He had a smile on his face as he went in and placed a kiss on her daughter's head. Looking at Nhallia; her angellic face as she slept; it was almost a shame to wake her as she had put so much effort into her parenting she took car of the baby.

He blew a kiss and headed for the door.

Nhallia rolled over in her sleep, one arm flinging out to the other side of the bed. As she spread and out and met no resistance, she frowned a little and grumbled, "Baba?" She opened her bleary eyes to look, but the other side of the bed really was empty.

Going down the corridor Newmark had to shake his head a bit; Nhallia had taken it easier, motherhood tended to take a lot from a woman. Of course to say taking care of a child was not easy is an understatement; doing it alone is something else. He wondered if she prefer it that way; taking so much of the time for the baby left little time for him.

When he had gotten into this he knew it will take them both but that seemed not to be the case and he understood it a bit; did not like it, yet Nhallia would have to find her balance between having a daughter and the ability to enjoy her life as well. SHe seemed to not need him at the moment.

Pushing herself up onto her elbows, Nhallia looked around and blinked the sleep out of her eyes. It was early- too early. She'd been up not long ago to change Aurea, and it should have been another hour or two before they started getting up for the day.

But she was the only one in the room. "Baba?" she called again, a little louder this time. When there was no answer, she rolled out of bed and reached for her housecoat, checking the rest of the quarters, wandering into the nursery last to see Aurea still sleeping "like a baby."

Nhallia frowned though as she went back out to the main room. "Computer, where is Doctor Newmark?" she asked. Again.

[Doctor Newmark is in the Gym.] The computer relayed.

She sighed a little. Right. He went for a run most mornings. She must have been sleeping through them lately, because she couldn't recall actually being aware of his work-outs in the recent past. Since Aurea was born really.

((Gym))

Newmark was doing his road work on the Tredmill; he decided to do it this way rather than running the decks. He would do a couple of miles then go through the weight exercises for the chest before a warm down.

Nhallia needed her rest he supposed; she would not likely notice as she had not noted his departure last night for the surgery and even less when he returned. It is becoming a routine, he had read that Parents fall into a routine; he had expected a warmer relationship rather than being put almost "out to pasture."

He began to run faster and trying to make the imagines moles fade away.

He still loved her deeply and the fact she had replaced him with the baby should be normal; he really thought that, but then it did not make it any less a problem for him. He wanted his wife and baby too. The fact their lives were more focused on the baby did not seem right, but then maybe he was too much of a Doctor and in his head rather than a husband and father should be?

((Quarters))

Nhallia sighed and finished her cup of herbal tea. No, or at least very little, caffeine for her still until Aurea was weaned, but she was starting to miss her teas and coffees.

Oh well. Doesn't matter, she told herself. Aurea needs her Maishma still, so she'll just have to do without coffee for a while longer.

Nhallia looked in on the nursery, and Aurea was still asleep. Maybe now was a good time to get a shower in, be done and out before Baba got home....

She tossed the housecoat onto the bed as she went through to get a wash- her hair certainly needed it, she had noticed.

[Gym]

Newmark worked the Chest machines hard; he had some extra pent-up energy he need to expend and physical activity seemed to be working. He and his Wife loved each other still; at least he knew he did, and the Baby should have made life better.

Why then is he here an hour early trying to get out frustration that should not be there? He changed machines and with each exertion he could feel the energy used in his work out but once expended another thought took up residence and he did not get the full effect.

This was almost as annoying as the base problem.

[Quarters]

Enjoying the hot water, and having indulged in several minutes of just allowing the spray to drum on tense muscles on her back and neck, Nhallia scrubbed her hair gently and tilted her head back to rinse. As the water swirled around and into her ears, something made her perk up and lean out of the stream. What had that been...

She reached out and turned off the water.

In the sudden quiet, the baby's wail cut through like a knife in her ears.

"Aurea!" Nhallia gasped and dashed out the shower. Her heart started racing instantly and adrenaline shot through her system. Only habit had her grabbing the housecoat as she ran through the bedroom- she certainly didn't stop to dry off.

"Little Love, I'm here, Maishma's here. Oh, what is it?" she crooned as she picked up her baby. It became apparent in a heartbeat that she needed a diaper change.

"I'm so sorry," Nhallia murmured and quickly changed her daughter out of the soiled- and smelly- diaper.

Nhallia put the baby up on her shoulder and swayed her gently, rubbing her back and speaking soothingly to reassure her. "I'm here. Maishma's here. Maishma won't leave you," she repeated over and over again.

Newmark stood just outside the doorway, over a simple Diaper change; she was wet in a housecoat that clung to her holding the baby; how that sight should have affected him, like her coming out of the ocean or just to tease him a bit when he came home early and she did not finish her 'fluffing' for a date or just because she wanted to be pretty for him.

"You can go finish drying off." He said as he entered. "You do not want to get her all wet." He even forced a smile. "I can hold her til you get dressed." He offered to take her. "Baba can take care of her for five minutes." He put a clean towel over his shoulder. "Then I need a shower before shift." He did not even think she might want to wash his back anymore?

Nhallia turned quickly. "Baba! I didn't hear you come in." Her eyes flicked down to the baby. "I was going to wash up while she was asleep, but I heard her shrieking... I guess I wasn't quick enough." She gave a weak smile that didn't reach her eyes as she passed their daughter to him. "I'll just be a minute or two."

Accepting his daughter he gave her a smile.

"You think you missed this wait until Potty training, I can relay horror stories I have heard from parents." Running his fingers along his daughter's back he could feel her little body's bio-eletric signature; the way her muscles were tensing and relaxing. "We might have to replace carpets and furniture from some extremes." He chuckled and ran his six fingers along her body and was able to stimulate blood flow and ease the muscle tensions. "Take what you need, she is clean and happy for the moment, hungry will follow soon enough." He winked.

"Just a few minutes," she promised again and scooted around him and to the master bedroom. She hung up her housecoat to dry and grabbed a towel, but ended up having to turn on the water to rinse her hair again- she found some suds still hanging around.

It was a bit longer than she had planned by the time she was dressed in dry clothes and her hair damp but brushed and twisted up into a clip. "Sorry, Baba," she apologized as she finally got out to the main room again.

Newmark was sitting with Aurea nestled on his shoulder cooing as he had her a bottle of breast milk and she seemed happily having breakfast. Her Baba looking at her and speaking clearly. "A little pony with wings flutter about the Little Lady and seemed to be just out of reach making Horse faces at her..."

Nhallia pulled up short and stared at the bottle in his hand. "Wha- what are you doing?" she asked.

"Feeding the baby." Newmark looked a kid with hand in cookie jar. "She started cry and you were in the shower... I should have checked if you were dressing or in shower..."

"But I was right here, if you'd told me I wouldn't have taken so long- I was right here for her!"

"I should have checked if you were dressing or in shower..." Realization hit him. "Oh... I am sorry, I-I just went like it was my turn... sorry, still cross-signals, I just wanted you not to be rushed."

Nhallia shook her head as she started over, reaching out automatically. "It's never rushing if she needs me."

"Bottle is half done but you don't know the end of the story." He kind of teased. "Sure you do not want me finish and you can actually get a snack or something? I don't get a chance often enough to cuddle her?" He even tried the innocent look.

"I thought you wanted to shower and get to work," Nhallia said, pulling up short.

"Maybe you are right." He stood. "Aurea can finish the bottle but she will have to wait story end as I was just getting to it when you came out." He was disappointed but he knew Nhallia would not let up so best to just avoid conflict. "The baby is comfy and don't get a chance to cuddle as much as you, but duty does call." He said while off to the shower.

Nhallia gathered Aurea close but ignored the bottle, reaching to loosen her nursing shirt instead. "Baba can finish the story later. For breakfast, Maishma's here, my Little Love, she didn't go anywhere," she reassured the baby as she headed to the nursery and the rocking chair there.

Newmark hesitated, the second time since he been back that she said exactly that.

"She has best mommy around, why would she worry about that Love?" He winked and started off to the shower.

Settling into the rocker and settle Aurea in to nurse, Nhallia glanced towards the door for only a moment before she looked back down. "She never has to," she murmured very quietly, so only the baby could hear. "Maishma is not going anywhere," she promised.
