Food for the Gods
Location: Newmark Family Quarters
OLD
Newmark knew then he was going to be reading for a bit; Aurea would be fussy for about ten more minutes before Nhallia would be convinced the baby was down for a bit. The soft voice of the Lead Singer for her Jazz trio the baby might not know how special her lullaby are and that people would enjoy having Nhallia sing them to sleep as well.
NEW
Newmark went to the bedroom, it was a routine, the baby would go down and Nhallia would not be far behind. The sleeping schedule of his two ladies are totally based upon Aurea; as it should be at this stage, most mothers learn to keep a close sleep schedule to the baby; breaking some of the longer naps to do other housework or just relax themselves between tasks. That is why Newmark comes home and does some tidying up to help out; preps meals and just caters to the needs of his Ladies when he can. The hours of a Doctor do not allow him to do it often.
After a few repetitions, Nhallia switched to humming when she felt Aurea relax into the absolutely boneless sleep that infants get. When she was finally convinced that Aurea was indeed fully asleep, she laid her down in the crib. It had only been a few nights since they had stopped using the bassinet in the master bedroom and Nhallia still wasn't quite sure how she felt about being in a whole other room from Aurea at night. True, she wasn't getting up to feed every two hours anymore, when having the baby right by her bed then had been easiest, but still- Aurea would be hungry again in about four hours. She was tempted to bring the baby back to her bassinet, which was still next to her side of the bed in case of a fussy night. She contented herself with kissing her daughter and murmuring a promise that she would be right in the next room and that Aurea could stay in there with Maisha any night she was lonely or scared.
She flicked on the small light in the corner so she could see when she came in for the night feeding and slipped out silently to her own bedroom.
Newmark was just finishing the preparation for bed when Nhallia came in. He gave her his understanding grin as he watched her for a moment.
"She is getting better with her own room Love." He winked. "Not easy to let her go I do admit yet I know is for the best. You both need sleep and quiet from each other makes it easier of Aurea as well, she is growing to be quite the pretty little Lady."
Nhallia pressed her lips together and spoke first with her hands before her voice caught up. "I'm just worried- what if I don't hear her right away? Even with the doors open... maybe we should have gotten a baby monitor after all- then I'd be sure to hear even a small noise."
"My Lady, you know as well as I that she is quite close and anything above normal we have the computer monitoring as well." He tried to calm her as he went to her and took her hands. "You and I need rest as well to be at our best for her. Everything will be fine." He smiled. He did not tell her he had placed a tricirder and probe out of sight but in range; Aurea had a mini biobed monitored by the computer.
"I just don't like it..." she tried to explain.
"I have been around babies with Doc since my teen years; I can say with great humility that she is a lovely and healthy baby girl; the walls are not so thick and your Mother Hearing is quite acute; that fondness for music has also tuned you for noting the pitch and tones of one young baby Aurea. You will not fail her; I know that as I live and breathe."
She didn't look convinced, and she didn't look impressed by his doctor-knowledge either, as she slipped out of her clothes, leaving her large fluffy robe by the bed where she could grab it on her way to the nursery.
Newmark knew that look; he could have commented or he could have gotten the monitor but the reaction at dinner was a good reason for not doing it. Why have her jumping up at each little noise?
Nhallia slid into bed without another word, still looking towards the door apprehensively.
"You are upset." Newmark kissed her cheek and went to bed; he was off duty on the morrow so he could invest the time to resolve this.
"No- not upset- just... she depends on me for everything. She's helpless and tiny and defenseless. I won't let her down- I won't," she said fiercely, her eyes flashing dangerously. Verdeath had seen her lose her temper before, but this wasn't anger- it wasn't a jealous fury- it was that protective instinct that mothers displayed throughout the universe when their young are threatened or in danger.
"There is nothing dangerous to her right now." Newmark tried to say. "Just know that too much attention will spoil her." He put up a finger to get the 'end' of his statement. "Finding that balance is the task and you are doing well and she is thriving so you might take that into your calculations and just know your record is unblemished and unlikely to change."
"I highly doubt that an infant can be spoiled just by feeding, burping and changing her when she needs it. When she gets older, yes, she'll need limits, but food and comfort are pretty reasonable requests, even from a baby," Nhallia argued, getting just a little angry now.
"Perhaps..." He look in her eyes and realized he was not on steady ground here. "I am acting more like a Doctor rather than father..." he put his hands up in surrender. "I did not mean to make it seem anything other than the normal progression of this stage of infant maturity."
A little mollified, Nhallia nodded at him, softening as she settled down into the covers.
Best that he could get, Newmark joined his wife; his hypersensitive touch was enough to let him know things were not bad and he could rest without latent tensions.
"Night Love." He bid his wife.
Nhallia smiled at him. "Good night, Baba," she said as she settled down to dose- with one ear open.
