[OLD]
"I'm not saying she wont, Ronnie. I know how dangerous it can be and I don't want her going through the same thing. My parent's had no idea I had it until much later, so they were as caught off guard with it as anyone." Damion paused slightly. "She'll have us, whether she has it or not, I just want to know if she does."
[NEW]
"We'll be fine, and we'll know how to help her, if she has it." Ronnie smiled and squeezed Damion's hand. She had no doubt that between the two of them, they could handle whatever came up.
"I'll do a DNA test on the baby as soon as possible.", Alex said, assuringly, "But this condition might only show up in a later age.", she added, "Neverthless, I'm pretty sure we can keep it well-checked and avoid it ever causing any harm to your child, if it develops.", she pushed on the 'if', "It's a very rare condition, with a very slight chance of developing hereditary. So, don't worry.", she added with a gentle smile, looking at the sweet couple, "Besides, with such loving parents, I'm sure she won't have any problems at all."
"Thank you," Ronnie said for both of them. She smiled up at Damion, happy for him.
[hours later]
As predicted, the hard part of labor have just began, and the past three or four hours were spent with the soon-to-be proud mother experiencing heavy conctractions throughout, with the soon-to-be proud dad at her bedside. The doctor gave Ronnie more sedatives, and now had full surgical equipment alongside the bioscanner at her patient's bed. Everything was ready for the arrival of their littlest new shipmate. It was now just a matter of time.
"Soon now, really soon.", Alex smiled at Ronnie. She was here with the woman during every minute of the past hours, feeling like if she were re-living the time when she gave life to Veronica (despite the fact that it was a much easier and less painful childbirth), and felt a bit tired.
Damion held onto Ronnie's hand the entire time. He would lean down and kiss her fingers gently, from time to time, to assure her he was there and he wasn't leaving.
Ronnie was glad Damion was with her. He helped her stay calm and focused. She squeezed his hand and smiled. Soon, she hoped. This was definitely harder than anything she'd done before and she was ready for it to be over.
"Alright. Concentrate. You'll feel a great urge to push soon.", Alex said, checking the biomonitor, showing the baby, getting ready to see the light of day very soon now.
Ronnie squeezed Damion's hand as she focused on breathing through the pain--which was easier said than done. The contractions grew closer and closer together and, at last, she had a strong urge to PUSH.
"Okay.", Alex said, as she looked at the monitor, then back to her patient, "It seems you're fully dilated. You're in the finish line."
"Good." Another strong contraction hit Ronnie and she squeezed tightly to Damion's hand while she pushed. When the contraction ended, she lay back on the pillow, breathing hard.
"Alright.", the doctor said, monitoring the going-ons, "Now you need to push. Concentrate on that thought, let the urge come over you. You're doing it good. Very good.", she said on an assuring voice.
Ronnie couldn't help crying out as another contraction came and pushed.
"You're doing it really good.", the doctor repeated, while she put on surgical gloves. "Nurse, please assist.", she looked at Helga, then back to Ronnie, "You don't need to rush. Just push when you feel like it. It's painful, but soon it'll be over."
Helga smiled at Ronnie. "We've seen many babies born here. You're in good hands." She smiled at Damion. "And you are doing very well. I think you will make a fine father."
Ronnie nodded, briefly. Another contraction came, harder and longer. She pushed again, feeling the baby move down. Good. At least she was heading in the right direction.
"Well, I hope your new boss won't disappoint you.", Alex said to Helga with a smile, then turned back to her patient, quickly checking the biomonitor. "The baby is moving.", she said, with another smile, this time a gentle assuring one, "She's certainly on her way out."
By now, Ronnie was tired, sweaty, and more than ready for the baby to make an appearance. Before she could respond, she was hit with another contraction, and another strong urge to push.
Helga smiled. "When it's all over, you'll forget about the pain and just remember the good parts."
"There are good parts?" Ronnie replied, only half kidding.
"Oh, the best parts will only come later.", Alex said with a slight sarcastic grin, "Waking you up in the middle of the night. Getting a serious stomach infection the same night mom and dad are supposed to finally go out together, only the two of them. Crying for weeks to get her the latest toy she wants, then breaking it after five minutes. And so on..."
"Thanks for the encouragement," Ronnie said. She knew raising a kid was no picnic, but she was still looking forward to it. There would be more good times than bad. Another contraction came, harder and longer than the others. She screamed as she pushed.
"You're welcome.", Alex grinned, "But seriously, believe me, it's the best ever thing in the world.", she added, with encouragement in her words. Then, a large contraction came, and looking at her patient, the doctor knew now it was definitely time. "Good. Good. Now push a bit more gently.", she said, "I can see her head."
Gently? Ronnie wanted to keep pushing until the baby was out. It was almost...euphoric. It was an odd feelling, the mixture of pleasure and pain. She took a deep breath and pushed with the contraction. She could feel the baby's head move further out with each contraction. And then, the head was out and she fell back against the pillow, panting heavily.
Alex smiled as she witnessed the miracle of life just happening right before her eyes. This was one of those occasions she truly loved her profession. "Alright. Our little beauty is making her way out. We were gentle, but now... push hard!", she told Ronnie, standing ready to welcome the newly born.
Another contraction hit and Ronnie was more than happy to comply. The shoulders took a little effort, but then, once they came through, the rest of the baby quickly followed. She tried to sit up and look, but she was too tired. "How does she look?"
The doctor acted quickly. She gently picked up the newborn baby with her gloved hands, and elevated it so she could take a good look at it. The child was perfectly fine and looking very healthy, crying loud as she had her first sight of the outside world.
"She's beautiful.", Alex smiled, as she showed the newborn to the proud mom, and then to the proud dad, getting ready to wash the baby's body and separate the umbilical cord.
Ronnie smiled at the doctor, then looked at Damion, grateful he'd been by her side.
Damion smiled, his eyes teary, as he placed one hand on Ronnie's forehead and continued to hold onto her hand with the other. "You did it, Baby." He whispered as he rose slightly and leaned over her, kissing her on her forehead. "You did so great. I'm proud of you."
Carefully performing the above tasks, the doctor then gently folded the baby into a small towel-like cloth, and handed her to Ronnie. "She's the most beautiful baby I've ever seen.", she said smiling, "And she's perfectly healthy.", she added, looking at the biomonitor's quick scan results. "Relax now. You were part of a small miracle, and you performed great."
Ronnie took her little girl carefully and smiled down at her. "Hi there." She was beautiful. Ronnie gently caressed her damp head and looked at the doctor. "Thank you."
The little girl turned her head and began to root at Ronnie's breast. "I think she's hungry." The new mother smiled again and began to feed her new baby.
"There now, you both have the hang of things," Helga said, beaming at the two. "Now we'll leave you three to get to know each other. Just call if you need anything."
Damion placed a hand gently on the baby's head, caressing it softly, as he smiled wide and whispered. "Hey Princess. I can already tell you're gonna be daddy's little girl."
Ronnie looked from the baby to Damion. "Why don't we name her Elsa Constance, after both our mothers?"
"That's beautiful." Damion whispered softly. "You're beautiful." He added, leaning down to Ronnie and kissing her on top of hear head. He heard the baby fuss slightly, so he moved over and kissed the baby gently on her head before whispering. "So are you." He chuckled softly before looking over to Ronnie.
"You're pretty special, too." The baby waved a fist in the air. "See? Elsa agrees with me."
"Are you sure its not gas?" Damion whispered softly.
The baby burped loudly. Ronnie laughed and looked at Damion. "That was gas." Elsa cooed and waved her fist in the air again.
Ronnie handed the baby to Damion. "Here. You hold her for a bit. I think I'm ready for a nap."
Damion took Elsa into his arms and rocked his gently from side to side before looking over to Ronnie, who already feel fast asleep. He couldn't help but smile as he looked down to Else and whispered. "Okay. Rule one: Mommy is always right, unless she isn't around, than Daddy is the one whose right." He let out a soft chuckle before the baby let out another coo, extending her tiny fist toward his face. Damion let out another smile as he leaned down and kissed Elsa's hand gently before pulling away and whispering. "Don't worry. You'll learn as you go, just like Daddy did."
