[OLD]

"Don't worry.", Alex said, calming her down, and switched to professional mode, "Everything's fine. It's only that Betazoid childbirth is a bit more complicated than ours, and the baby being 1/4 percent Betazoid in a human womb, we can expect some longer and more difficult labor,", she explained, "But I can assure you, everything will be fine.", she smiled, and then asked, "How's our little girl called?"

[NEW]

"We haven't decided on a name yet," Ronnie admitted.

"It's never too late.", the doctor said, while she picked up her tricorder again, "Relax now..."

"Trying," Ronnie replied as she worked on slowing her breathing. Where was Damion?

"Alright, the analgesic is working. You'll feel better in a moment.", Alex said, assuringly, "My daughter's birth was an easy one, fortunately. But I felt the same, I was really anxious. But no reason for that. Feel relaxed, you're going to perform a little magic today."

"I've never done this before," Ronnie admitted. "So I'm really not sure what to expect."

"Noone is. That's the beauty of it.", Alex smiled, as she read the tricorder readings, "Now we have to expect more frequent contractions. Be prepared for that. In case of a fully human child I'd say we'll soon reach the zenith of the first active phase, but those Betazoid genes are tricky. It's gonna take longer.", she explained, then added, "Don't worry. And daddy has plenty of time to arrive."

"Damion!" Ronnie called telepathically. "Okay," she said aloud. She wanted a distraction and hoped that Damion would arrive soon.

"Nurse.", Alex called out, "Get me a Mark III bioscanner please.", she then turned back to her patient, glancing at the monitor, trying to calm her down and distract her, "She seems to be a perfectly healthy child. The father is only part Betazoid, is that right?"

"Yes, doctor." Helga retrieved the bioscanner and handed it to Alex.

"He is," Ronnie said. "On his mother's side." She watched the doctor work, fascinated with the process.

"Thank you, Nurse.", the doctor said, as she took the bioscanner, "I guess, he retains some of his mother's telepathic abilities.", she then said to Ronnie, trying to indulge into conversation as a way to divert her attention from the incoming painful phase.

"Yes, he's a telepath," Ronnie said. She shifted a little to get more comfortable. "So, what should I expect?"

"As I said, this will take a few hours at least.", the doctor explained, as she placed the small bioscanner on Ronnie's stomach, "Soon you'll be getting the hard part of labour, but don't worry. It'll be over... sooner or later."

"At least it gives Damion plenty of time to get here," Ronnie joked.

The doors to Sickbay opened as Damion came in, slightly out of breath. He gave a bit of a nervous smile before walking the rest of the way after spotting Ronnie and the Doctor. "What did I miss? Nothing important I hope?"

Ronnie grinned. "Nothing important. You're here in plenty of time." She reached out a hand to him, glad that he was here. Just his presence made her feel better.

Alex watched as the man came in quite in a hurry, and noticed how much Ronnie's mood changed for the better by him being by her side. "The soon-to-be-proud dad, I guess.", she smiled at the man, as she approached him, "I'm Doctor Alves.", she introduced herself, "No need to worry, we have plenty of time. In fact, the hard part is just about to start."

Damion took Ronnies hand and smiled, kissing her fingers gently, before looking over to the Doctor and nodding his head. "Damion Wolfe." He said softly. "Doctor, I have a condition, its under control now, but I've had it for a long time. Is it possible our baby will have it?"

"What kind of condition?", Alex asked surprised, but politely in the professional manner. She regretted not having enough time to read through all the crew medical records left behind by her predecessor. "Did you consult about this with the previous CMO? I mean, about the baby... and this condition..."

"We had private conversations about it." Damion replied softly, squeezing Ronnie's hand gently before continuing. "Personally, I wouldn't like our baby to go through the same thing."

"Tell her what sort of problems you've had," Ronnie coaxed. She understood why Damion didn't want to say much about his condition, but the doctor needed something to go on if she was going to give him an answer.

"You can expect my utmost confidence in this matter.", the doctor said assuringly, as she got that the man found this topic to be something he'd rather not discuss publicly, probably feeling it might be embarrassing. Common thing with patients, Alex thought in herself. "Nurse. Please, excuse us.", she then said to Helga, "Please, stand ready in the other room, I'll call you when you're needed."

"Yes, ma'am," Helga said. She gave Ronnie a reassuring smile before walking out of the room.

"Alright.", Alex looked back at the couple.

"I don't know what its called." Damion said as he spoke softly, looking toward the doctor. "But I know it affects the aggressive part of the brain, removing control for a small period, and only responding through basic instinct. During my time in Intel a injection was designed to keep me from going into that aggressive side. I am sure its in the database."

"I see.", Alex nodded firmly, then started a quick mental search regarding the disease the man described. She remembered similar cases she studied in the past, and believed that she could identify the disease he was talking about. She might have a clearer memory if she wasn't right in the middle of delivering a baby, she thought. "I believe, I know the condition you're describing.", she spoke up.

"He's doing much better now." Ronnie smiled at him. "I think our daughter will be fine, but he isn't so confident."

"I'm not saying she wont, Ronnie. I know how dangerous it can be and I don't want her going through the same thing. My parent's had no idea I had it until much later, so they were as caught off guard with it as anyone." Damion paused slightly. "She'll have us, whether she has it or not, I just want to know if she does."
