Unexpected Run-ins

1,451 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Shadow Dance
Location: Corridors

Alexandra had located Lieutenant 'Remy' Batiste, the Calypso's Chief of Intelligence near the Chief of Security's Office and moved to intercept him. Time was not on their side and if Alexandra had any hope of exonerating Tate before the Jenefrans made an example of her she needed to act quickly. It was this urgency that drove her with haste through the corridors of the Calypso.

"Lieutenant Batiste! A word." she called out to the dwarvish man walking ahead of her.

"I have a word for you, Commander Vance. It's called Busy" Remy replied, taking a moment to acknowledge Alexandra before continuing on his way. "Unlike most people, when I see the name Vance, I don't see that as a free pass. Perhaps you can make an appointment with my assistant. Since they both seem to be busy, that leaves the monkey. I think he's up a tree. Check the arboretum."

Alexandra grimaced as she towered over the man, which didn't say much given his size. "Then perhaps you can explain that to Jennifer Tate's head when the King puts it on his floor or maybe you could start by asking what exactly it is I am looking for, that is of course unless the monkey is more interested in Tate's safety then you perhaps?"

Remy stopped in his tracks and turned to face Alexandra. "If you were ANY other person I would proceed with removing your feet out from under you, starting at your kneecaps, before ripping off your arm and proceeding to shove it down your throat! Given the size of your mouth, I am sure the process wont take that much time at all!" The little Intel Chief suddenly began to walk firmly in her direction, eyes narrowed and locked onto her, despite their height difference. "Do not think, Madam, that because my large Caitian friend is not at my side that I am not capable of delivering a normal sized beating. Some people think that I keep him from flying off the handle, but its actually the other way around. Now if you ever proceed to think that I do not care for Miss Tate's well being, I will be more than willing to do to you what your father should have done for you years ago, and that's tan your hide! Now, unless you plan involves a big ship and massive army, I don't want to hear it."

Vance withheld any emotion from his comments as it would prove unproductive, she was hear to help him not fight with him. She kneeled down bringing herself to his level. "Please Lieutenant, I am not here to quarrel with you or exchange insults. I too care for Jennifer and I would like to assist you in seeing she returns to the ship. I wish I could amass an army or a large ship but I have to play this one by the book. The Commodore has me on a tight leash, please allow me to assist you in anyway I can. I believe I can get us to Jennifer and we can go from there, I would like you to come with me."

"You are lucky you aren't in the brig with the amount of crap you pulled!" Remy yelled before looked around and taking a few steps closer, this time adjusting his tone to a whisper. "What ever happened to the days of stealth and cunning? Dammit, you're the daughter of Jethro Vance. I would imagine he trained you in not getting caught. That's Spy 101."

"I was emotionally compromised." Vance admitted bowing her head showing a rare hint of emotion. "I allowed Morat to get into my head and skew my judgement. I should have asked for help but instead I tried to act like some damned cowboy. I would like the opportunity to correct that."

"And should that opportunity ever arise, you can consider me and team in your corner. You're not alone, Miss Vance. You're surrounded by allies and friends. All you need to do is look and ask." Remy replied softly with a bit fo a smile.

"Then I would like the opportunity to help you with Jennifer. Jethro has created dossiers for both myself and him as the Jenefrans will be unable to identify us as Starfleet. I would present myself as a Federation legal liason, a civilian whom works as a neutral party assigned to the Calypso to aid with the Jenefran negotiations should anything arise. I could use this as a means to present myself as a neutral means to assist them in solving their dispute in the best diplomatic manner possible. Make no mistake Lieutenant, I will ensure he knows killing Jennifer would be a grave mistake and bring the heavens down upon him, or atleast make him think that. It is important we get to Jennifer quickly, find out what the hell happened and then work on finding the princess whom I think is the key to Tate's return." Vance replied with empathy hoping it would reach the man.

"My Caitian, Miss Vance, is already on the trail of the Princess. He is the best tracker that I know and is more than willing to get the job done. If anyone can find the Princess, it's Mister Logan." Remy replied softly before raised a brow. "I'm confused. If you already have all this in place, what do you need me for?"

"The key to running a smooth operation is ensuring everyone is aware of exactly what that operation is. Lieutenant at last I checked you were the Chief Intelligence Officer and my collar is grey, therefore assets do not act without your approval." she responded.

Remy narrowed his eyes slightly before taking Vance's hand. He walked with her to a nearby door and tapped in a passcode to unlock the door. He than walked into the vacant room with her and locked the door behind them. "Miss Vance. I am sure your father taught you the way of Intel Babble. So, lets say hypothetically, I had already something in motion to get her out and off the Jenefran home world. Let us also say that this plan involves an experienced Grey Shirt whose done things like this before and has done so under the guise and protection of a certain Admiral we are very familiar with. The very Admiral who stood along side your father for many years. How would you react to that hypothetical?"

Alexandra had to think for a moment. Already she was faced with a situation in which she would betray Samantha's trust which she had sworn not to do. On the other hand, she was working with the crew which Samantha had asked her to do. "I would ask you the play and how I could assist if possible."

"The details of the play are in the hands of the Grey shirt who took on the role of the conductor. If you were to inquire about the details I would recommend you to talk to the conductor. As far as your assistance, perhaps you can stop by the local Q branch to pick up some special equipment that may be on sale. An extra set of eyes. Some undisclosed ears. Perhaps a pair of those x-ray specs you get on the back of comic books may come in handy. I heard the man who makes the toys has a big heart for someone small."

Alexandra nodded understanding of the cryptic rhetoric. "Very well then, I believe I have a train to catch."

"Really?" Remy said with raised brow. "I say conductor and your first through is choo-choo train and not orchestra? I swear, class and culture are lost now a days. Intel officers were supposed to be all class and sophistication, not shuttle chases and multiple sex partners." He paused again and shook his head before letting out a sigh and gesturing to the door. "Go. Go catch your train." He said disappointingly, putting the word train in air quotes.

Alexandra dropped her head indicating the point had brought forth a sad moment for her. "Our work is no orchestra nor is it beautiful. I say train, because I'd like to have something left in my existence to enjoy." she said as she walked through the sliding doors.
