"There are more things than the Nightstar, Captain." Damion said softly. "What they want is to make sure she can be trusted with the secrets I know. Believe me. I want this to work. I'm afraid if I let her into that world, would it change the woman I love and/or put them at risk. I don't want them to be at risk."
[NEW]
"She can keep secrets," Sam assured him. her. "You also need to realize that she's already at risk. You can't change that. Whatever you decide, it will change her. If you leave her to keep her safe, you may end up hurting her more than you want. Trust me, leaving someone you love and who loves you in the dark because you thin you're protecting them is never a good idea. Talk to her about it. She's been with you this long, you should know by know if she can handle staying with you."
"And how do you think it will feel if one of those personal demons comes back to haunt me and they get hurt in the process? Or worse?" Damion replied quickly and softly. "I wouldn't be able to control myself. I don't think I would be able to life with myself."
"And how would you deal with never seeing Ronnie or your child again? Do you honestly think that would be better than spending as much of your lives together as you can? Besides, you're no longer in Intel, you're in security. It's a different dynamic. Ronnie is a member of Starfleet. She takes risks every day. Do you honestly think she would rather never see you again just to be safe from something that may nor may not happen?"
Damion let out a bit of a laugh as he looked to Sam. "Captain." He paused for a moment, taking a deep breath before he went a bit more formal, unsure if they reached that level yet. "Sam. You've met Max. There is no such thing as no longer in Intel. We are the kind of offers that we are. You can't just shut off that kind of training. You're mistaken. I don't want to keep anything from here, but my duties remain the same no matter the department. Information and Secrets gathered during Intel are still classified to a certain point. Believe it or not, Max is on your side on this. He understands that keeping secrets wont help, but he also knows it has to be done via protocol. My only concern is, I know there is a risk and the consequences of that risk. With Ronnie now pregnant, my priority is protecting them. There are two options, as far as I see. One, leave it in the past and pray it doesn't come out from under a rock and come at me through my family or Two, put everything out on the table and face it when, or if, it shows up. Hopefully, with the support of my closest friends and the crew, should it ever come here."
"Damion, I understand your concerns," Sam said. "I agree that you do have to keep certain secrets and to some people you will always be a target. My point is that whether you stay with Ronnie or leave her because you feel that would protect her, she will still be at risk simply because she was with you and is carrying your child. They will always be a target. Wouldn't you rather be with her, share your life with her, and know she's okay than spend the rest of your life apart and still have to worry that someone will find out about her and target her just to get at you? Nothing you can do will keep her from that possibility. So why not make the most of what you have and be the one keeping her safe rather than leaving it to someone else?" She paused before adding, "No matter how much Ronnie loves you, if you drive her away, she will eventually go. She might even find someone else. Is that what you really want?"
"No. I don't." Damion replied. "It would kill me to see her with someone else. Watch another man raise my kid." He let out a sigh as he placed his hands on his hips and closed his eyes. "I'm sorry. This is all knew to me. I never planned on being a father. Max has always given me his word that he would protect me, and anyone close to me, no matter the situation, but the old man can only do so much." He paused for a moment, smirking a bit. "Don't even let know I called him old because he hates that." Damion let out a slight chuckle before ending it in a smile. "Maybe I'm just overreacting. Seeing dangers where there aren't any. I can't help it. It's beginning to be a bad habit. Overthinking the situation and looking for dangers where there aren't none. I don't know when it started. I used to just play things on the fly. Only reacting to the situation as it unfolds. Let my instincts kick in and react accordingly. Lately, I keep wanting to cover every angle to make sure no danger can catch me off guard. That's gone into overdrive once Ronnie told me the news. This ship is our home and I can't help but want to make sure nothing gets in that will cause it harm."
Sam put a hand on his shoulder. "Damon had his own fears to overcome when we first got together. He's a Marine. His job is also a dangerous one. Marines don't generally live to retirement -- at least they didn't for a long time." She smiled as she remembered the conversations they'd had back then. "I think getting married was the best thing that happened to both of us. I'm a better person -- and a better commander -- because of him. We have each others' back, and we have an entire ship full of people who will protect us -- and you, too. You and Ronnie aren't alone in this. You have each other; you have the crew, and you have Max." She glanced at the chronometer on the wall as her hand dropped to her side. "I have another meeting. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help the two of you."
"Thank you." Damion replied. "It means a lot." He said softly before giving her a smile and nodding his head. "I'll leave you to your meeting." He took one more look on the PADD before finally walking out of the briefing room.
