1,227 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Shadow Dance
Location: Ready Room
Timeline: Immediately after "Pulling Favors"

ON:

As each person left, Leroy moved to the Ready Room. It really was nothing he needed to talk to the two about but he wanted to make sure that his leaving was going off without a hitch. "Sorry to keep you both," he said as he stood pulling up his itinerary. "But I promise it will only be a minute or two. I wanted to go over where I'm flying and the ships I'm meeting up with to see if either of you have met the Captains. See what I'm possibly getting myself into as I go."

"Sure," Sam said. "I hope you can work things out with Yui."

"I hope so too," Leroy said with a slight shrug. "But that's neither here nor there. For right now I'm married to the Corps. But here's the list of ships I'll be meeting up with for refuels and check ins on my way back to 001." Pulling up the padd logistics he showed them both the names.

USS Running Horse
USS Audey Murphy
USS Geronimo
USS Constantinople

Sam sent an amused thought to Damon. The two of them had talked about work and relationships before. So far, the two of them had found a very happy medium. "The Captain of the Running Horse is 1/4 First Nation," Sam said. "He's very proud of his heritage. You'll probably have to listen to several stories about his ancestors while you're there. Other than that, you shouldn't have much trouble. On the other hand, the Captain of the Geronimo is Nairobi and very much by-the-book. She doesn't have much of a sense of humor, but she's a good officer."

"By the book is always fun. Makes a nice shell to crack," Leroy said with a smile. "As for the Captain of the Running Horse, I'd love to hear some of the old tales, it's been too long. Colonel, any of them you know?"

Damon was still upset that Leroy insulted his opinion a few minutes before in the meeting and had full intentions of remaining tight lipped. However, now that he was being asked directly he had no choice than to answer the question out of respect.

"Nairobi also has a weakness for playing chess." He added to his wife's comments. "Apparently she warms up a bit while playing it. If you have a favor to ask, that's when you do it. The Constantinople's Captain is Sean Bateman. Good man. We served in the war together, although, back then he was flying Hoppers for our ground troops. Never seen anyone with steadier hands as everything was going to hell." Damon shook his head out of thought. "He lost his wife and daughter during the war, sadly. From what I hear, he still won't talk about it. I wouldn't recommend bringing it up..." He hoped Leroy wouldn't embarrass him. "He'll bend the rules if you give him a good reason and really cares about his crew. I heard a rumor that he know's every crewman's name on Constantinople now and past. His crew loves him and their loyalty boarders on worship. Most importantly," Damon started "he loves his Vodka, and none of that synthohol garbage." He forced a smile.

"Not much of a drinker so I don't think I'll be spending much time with Captain Bateman. I just wanted to know what I was getting into during the refuels with these ships." Nodding he made some notes. "Also not much of a chess player, so there goes that as well."

"You do tend to get more interesting information than I do," Sam said to Damon. "They still think of me as the Geek Captain."

"And I married the geek. So you can't be that bad." Damon said with a shrug. He then added a wink to his wife. "I've always found that it's easier to strike an honest dialogue when you answer to a different chain of command...once the biases are gotten over, that is."

She turned to Leroy, "Just be yourself and do your job well, that's the most important thing. You'll make your own mark that way."

"Hopefully it's smooth sailing," Leroy said as he finished his notes. "If I've planned everything accordingly, I'll have two hours aboard each ship, staying away from major bases, and reach Earth in no more than a week or so. Is there anything you two want me to take to someone while I'm there?"

Sam thought for a moment. "No. Thank you."

Damon thought for a moment and then nodded. "I'll send a bottle of that Vodka to Sean. Tell him who it's from...he'll know what it's for." He smiled.

Sam smiled at Damon. "Good idea."

"Thank you both." Checking his chrono he half smiled. "I'm going to check with Intel to make sure that my routes don't take me through danger areas or areas that are under survalence for developing world's. No need to make myself even later than I will be."

Sam nodded. "Unless it's classified, most of that should be in the database. If it is, Intel would be the place to ask."

"Thank you Captain, I'll make sure to do that. Thank you both for the information you've given." Smiling he grabbed his padd, then turned to leave. "And Colonel, I'm sorry if you think that I was making a jab at you in the briefing, I wasn't. I was trying to get the arguing to stop so we could get this mission started and done quicker."

"If it was about moving things along then you wouldn't have added your opinions on the matter." Damon chipped. "In the future just remember that we all have a job to do. It's the Commodores to decide when a briefing is over."

After a moment Damon's posture visibly relaxed. "Right now your job is to make your Wing and the Calypso proud. I have no doubt that you will." He smiled.

"I'll do what I can Colonel. I don't think recruiting is going to do the ship or our staff proud. I'm just talking people into joining Starfleet." Chuckling, he visibly relaxed as well. "I'm just hoping that the dress uniform doesn't make me look like an over achiever. I believe it's bad form to scare the kids away with what you've done."

"The ones who will be of best use to Starfleet won't be scared away by your achievements," Sam added. "They'll be impressed by them."

She glanced at Damon and nodded. He covered the briefing quite well and she didn't need to add anything. He usually found a way to say what needed to be said quite succinctly. "If you have no further questions, we'll let you get ready for your trip. Good luck, Lieutenant."

"Thank you Commodore, and if you can find a way... keep Yui with the boat. I have a feeling that she's going to try and follow me." Shaking his head, he didn't know what to say to the woman, this was his assignment and it wasn't like he was going to be gone for good. Leaving the ready room he made his way back to his own quarters to make sure everything was perfect.
