Samantha walked around the generator, carefully recording it in every detail so it could be recreated on the holodeck. It would take them a long time to figure out how it works. Fortunately, both Admiral Burke and Admiral Hunter supported her proposal that the machine stay on the Calypso. Sam had a rudimentary idea how to use it, and she knew that, in time, she would become more familiar with it. Plus, she had both the clearance and the crew to do the job properly.
The only possible snag would be if Intel wanted to do this themselves and she had to pull rank. But she hoped it wouldn't come to that.
She finished the scan and holorecording. "Computer, transfer data to the holodeck computer, Command level access only. Authorization York Epsilon 2775 Gamma."
"Authorization confirmed. Data transferred to holodeck computer system."
Jayna walked into the room and nodded to the Commodore. "Hello, commodore."
"Hello, Lieutenant Mira. Have you read the data on the generator?"
"I have. It is quite interesting. I've found noting exactly like it in the Intel database."
"I didn't think you would," Sam replied. "We'll start here on holodeck to see what we can learn, then have a look at the generator itself. I want to limit exposure for now, and I've ordered that no one touch the generator without my authorization. We can't afford to have it damaged before we know how it works."
"Agreed," Jayna said. "Does the generator always cause that mental buzz?"
Sam nodded. "It does. If I'm around it too much, I begin to feel it in my bones. I think that's why Frenatus kept it in a back cave. It only seems to work on telepaths, though. It enhances your abilities."
Jayna walked around it, looking it over carefully. "Interesting. I see why we're working on the holodeck first."
Sam nodded. "Let's go meet the others so we can get started."
The two walked out of the room and Sam carefully secured it to command-level access only and the two headed for the holodeck.
"I've been looking through the database to see if I can find anything similar, but neither the generator nor Frenatus' species are in there," Jayna said.
"I'm not surprised. Although Frenatus has encountered the Federation somewhere in his travels," Sam said.
"Did he tell you when or where?" Jayna asked.
"No, but I get the impression it's been a long time," Sam replied. "I got vague images, nothing concrete enough to pinpoint. A hundred years ago, during the early days of exploration. Whatever it was, it didn't leave a good impression with him."
Jayna shook her head. "Too bad. I think there's a lot we can learn from him and his people."
"Perhaps. For now, it's best to leave him and the Gekkarans alone to develop. Starfleet will send ships by from time to time, but unless they find anything toward, they aren't to make contact. Hopefully that'll help Frenatus change his opinion of us."
"Stealing his generator isn't going to help any," Jayna commented wryly.
"No, but leaving it with him is too big a temptation. He'll be able to get another if he needs it. I don't think he's entirely cut off from his people."
"Not likely. He's bound to have a ship hidden away somewhere nearby," Jayna said. "He had to get there somehow. I wish we had time to look for it."
"The thought crossed my mind," Sam said. "I admit, I am curious to find out more about him and his people, but I don't think hunting down his ship and uploading his database will make a good second impression. I'm hoping that he'll change his opinion of us and will make contact in the future."
"I hope you're right," Jayna said, not so sure she would have waited if she'd had the chance.
"So do I," Sam admitted. "Now, let's see what we can learn from this machine."
The doors to the holodeck opened and the two women stepped inside.
