Arnon had been stuck in his office for most of the morning since returning from the Frenatus Incident. He hadn't had the chance to check in with Victoria yet. He'd of course asked after her when he got back, but he wanted to see her, to know for a fact that she was okay. Arnon thought he'd lost her when the Calypso was flung from orbit by the lizard man. He slipped into Sick Bay and tried to inconspicuously look for Victoria but that was a lost cause. When a nurse saw him she smiled and mouthed 'She's in there' pointing to the CMO's office. Apparently their relationship was no big secret among the medical staff. Arnon walked over to Victoria's office and poked his head in. She was lost in something and didn't notice him, so he slipped into her office and watched her for a moment.
"You know," he said. "Having yourself flung from orbit is a bit of an extreme tactic just to get rid of me. What's worse, it didn't even work, because hear I am."
Victoria jumped a little at Arnon's presence. She felt embarrassed with not sensing Arnon enter. However, she smiled as she stood and approached him. "I guess I'll have to try harder," she said as she wrapped her arms around him. His touch was comforting.
Arnon put his arms around Victoria and held her close and stroked her hair.
"I'm back," he said, softly and gently. "In one piece and very grateful to find you here safe and sound."
Taking a step back, she looked at him and smiled. "Just got a little banged up but nothing major. I'm glad you're safe as well...I--I shouldn't have volunteered you for the mission. I should have been there..." Guilt at her phobia of transporters came flooding back.
"Shh..." Arnon said, taking her hand in his. "I am fully capable of handling myself on an away mission. If I'd had an objection to joining the Away Team, I would have spoken out. Besides it sounds like you were needed here."
"Not really. I have good people in my department," she replied. "See you tonight? "
Arnon could tell that Victoria was pulling away, sheltering herself from her negative feelings about her phobia of the transporter. He wanted to help her but he could either be her lover or her counselor, not both. Selfishly, he wanted to be her lover.
"Of course," he said. "I look forward to it."
He hesitated.
"Whether you should have been on the Away Team or not you'll have to decide for yourself," he said. "As to whether any harm was done, I have the answer to that. We came out fine. We had one minor injury and I treated it. If something major had happened, I would have handled that, too. No harm was done. Please, keep this in mind when judging yourself."
Arnon kissed Victoria on the inside of her wrist and released her hand.
"And what happens when someone is injured and I am the only doctor who can't help them. How does that make me look?"
Arnon stood their quietly a moment, just listening, waiting for Victoria to finish before speaking. He wanted to hold her and tell her everything would be alright but he didn't want to smother her. It hurt to see her in such anguish.
"It's not really important how I think that makes you look," he said after a moment. "It's only really important how you think your transporter related anxiety makes you look, and more importantly how it makes you feel."
"Honestly, I hate it. But that's enough of that. You're back and I'm happy to see you."
While Arnon personally felt that Victoria would be better served by dealing with her transporter phobia, he was happy to be her go to choice of distraction. Selfish of him, but true.
Arnon gently pulled Victoria into his arms and kissed her.
"So," he said with a smile. "Can I assume you're going to the Commodore's little shindig this evening? If you wanted to go as a Tahitian island princess, I wouldn't complain."
Victoria laughed. "Yes, I'm going and it's a surprise. So you're just going to have to wait and find out tonight."
"Hmm...." Arnon replied. "I shall wait with bated breath. Until later, my love."
"Until then," she smiled as she watched Arnon exit.
