802 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Point of View
Location: USS Calypso -- Sickbay
Timeline: Before the Ball

Mara stepped off the turbolift. A PADD in her hand. She headed down the corridor until she reached a door that said “Sickbay” on it. The doors hissed opened and she stepped inside. She looked around from one corner to the other. She didn’t see anyone. It was very quiet.

“Hello…” She called out as she took a couple of more steps inside.

Victoria every so often would work late. This time, she was busy looking over recent patients who had been in Sickbay. Even the crewman who had been seriously wounded when the shop was hit by the energy beam had been allowed to leave Sickbay. At hearing a woman's voice call out, she stood and exited here office. "Hello. I'm Doctor Drani. What can I do for you?"

"Hello." Mara replied to the doctor. "My name is Mara Cross, I just arrived to the Calypso. I will be serving as the new Chief Operations Officer." She stepped in closer to Doctor Drani. She didnt find it fitting to be talking clear across the room. "I wanted to stop by and check in with the Chief Medical Officer." She explained.

Drani extended her hand. "Welcome aboard, Ms. Cross," she greeted. "Please have a seat over on the bio bed."

"Thank you." She replied as she extended her own hand. Once they shook hands Mara headed over to the bio bed pointed to by Doctor Drani. "I see that I won't be the only one working later around here." She said in a teasing manner as she took a seat on the bed.

Victoria let out a chuckle. "Yeah. Every so often I like to work late. It allows me to catch up on work," she replied as she grabbed and opened a medical t ricorder. "Have you had a chance to meet any other crew yet?"

"Honestly, in my experience I have come to learn that I get most of my work done after hours. Less distractions." She explained. "Outside of yourself, and Commodore York I have not had a chance to meet anyone else. I honestly haven't even settled into my quarters yet."

"Good, because everyone aboard this ship is crazy save for the captain and myself," she joked as she began running a medical scan.

Mara chuckled at the joke made by the Doctor. "I will keep that in mind." She looked over at the doctor. "You know, you could be the crazy one, and everyone else is sane." She winked at the doctor with a smile on her face.

"Touché," Drani smiled as she tapped a few more commands into the medical tricorder. She liked Mara and was sure she would fit right in with the crew. "Where were you stationed before here?"

"I served aboard the USS Acasta for a few years. First just as an Operations Officer, and then later I was moved into an Assistant Chief role." She explained. "It seemed like they saw some potential in me." She added jokingly. "How long have you been here?" Mara asked.

"Not too long, actually. I came aboard a few weeks before the past mission. I was dreading coming back but so far I have met some great people," Drani stated as she stored the results of the medical scans into the medical computer.

"Coming back?" Mara looked at the Doctor puzzled. "Did you take some time away from Starfleet?" She asked.

Drani closed the tricorder and set it aside on the table and took a deep breath. "You can say that. I had resigned my commission due to a mission where an admiral allowed an entire civilization to die off from a deadly plague that we had the means to cure."

Mara hadn't expected an response like that. Part of her wished that she hadn't asked. "I'm sorry." She said. She leaned forward gently placing her hand on the hand of the doctor for a few seconds. She gave her a small smile before pulling back.

"It's alright," Victoria replied with a grin. "Besides, things are looking up for me."

Mara seeing her grin made her smile. "I'm glad to hear that, and as crazy as this might sound I'm glad you are here." She said. "So, how am I looking? No serious illnesses I should worry about?" She asked jokingly.

Chuckling, Drani replied, "unfortunately you're completely healthy. "

Mara gave her a look. "You almost sound disappointed."

"Healthy people are boring, " she winked.

Mara laughed. "If that's how you see it then I don't mind being boring one bit." She said as she shifted lightly in her seat. "I should probably let you get back to work."

Drani nodded with a smile. "You're free to go."

"Great. Thank you Doctor. Hopefully I will see you again. Maybe drinks sometimes." Mara said walking towards the door.
