Damon was quick to start chipping away at the charred dirt and small stones. Despite being incredibly dense and difficult to burn through, the soil gave way easily with a shovel. The remaining few inches only took a couple of minutes to chip away before Damon saw a small glimmer of light pierce through a small hole of where the barrier had been broken through.

"SAM?" He yelled out as he furiously dug away at the opening.
"DAMON!" she called back. ~I knew you would come,~ she added, telepathically.
Scotty was first one down the tunnel. He used his hands to help make the hole bigger.
Sam held back just long enough to put her PADD in her pack and make sure everyone else had left the cave. She grabbed her backpack and walked quickly down the tunnel, eager to get outside for some fresh air. And to see Damon.
When she caught up to the others the hole had been opened enough to get people out, with a little assistance. Alexandra was the first one through. Sam indicated for the Marines to go next. That led to a brief, but amicable, debate between Sam and Riley. He felt it his duty to go last. She, as leader of the party, felt she should make sure all her team was safe first.
In the end, Sam let Riley help her over the rubble and to the opening where she reached out her hand for help getting down the other side. A hand grasped hers and she immediately knew who it was. Damon.
Damon was a little more than relieved that she was okay. He helped her down to his level and gave her a quick hug once she touched the earth, anything more than that seemed a little out of place considering their circumstances. "I'm glad you're okay." An understatement. "Let's get you out of here." He wanted to say more, but there wasn't enough time with the battle still happening outside.
"Yes, let's get out of here," Sam echoed. She wanted to hug him tight and not let go, but they had to get everyone back to the ship first.
As they walked to the cave entrance they could hear the sounds of weapons fire. Sam looked at Damon. "What's that?"
"When we got here we were attacked by a number of hostiles. From the look of it, they were the ones who caused the cave in. We've been trying to root them out for hours now." He looked over to her. "I'm guessing that the machine you were looking at was the cause of the dampening field?"
"It was. Being trapped gave me enough time to figure it out. The machine is some sort of planetary defense mechanism. It also transports people from one location to another -- outside the cave, unfortunately." Pirates. That explained a lot. She looked at Damon. "Stockton?"
He shrugged. "I hope he wasn't one of them, I left the camp leaving the doctor in charge of the others. By now they would have been beamed back to the Orion. Haven't heard anything about them so I assume that Sheridan has it under control."
----
Kara took careful aim and shot two more pirates trying to sneak around them to ambush them from the side. "Marshall, see the bushes over there, send a volley into them. They don't look quite right."
Marshall aimed and launched another volley of three grenades. The bush caught fire and screams could be heard from inside. "Good job," Kara told him. "We need to pull back to the cave entrance and get the others. It's time to get out of here."
She signaled to the rest of the fire team. One of them had a nasty wound on his shoulder, but he was mobile. The other looked good. She taped her combadge. "Melo to Sheridan. Pull back to the cave, we're bugging out."
Sheridan heard the request and notified the security and Marine team to pull back to the cave. "Affirmative Melo get back to Orion, we'll be right behind you."
"Go ahead, Commander. I'll follow Lieutenant Raine up, sir. We don't leave people behind," Kara replied.
She arrived at the cave entrance just as the party began to emerge.
Damon walked out of the tunnel a pace or two in front of Samantha, weapon in hand. "Sergeant," He called out to Kara. "how's it looking?"
"Had a few more reinforcements, but we've hit a lull, for now. The Commander was going to beam out. Perhaps now would be a good time to follow suit, sir," Kara replied.
"Agreed." Damon said, nodding. "Have the rest of our Marines make their way back to this position."
Kara nodded. She signaled the others to join here, or those who had not already grouped around the cave. Within moments, a count was taken and everyone was accounted for. "All here, sir. Sheridan beamed up with the engineers."
"Good work Sergeant." He then addressed all of the Marines "Eyes open people!" He didn't want to take the chance that any more hostiles would get the best of them while they waited for transport.
Damon tapped his combadge. =A= Away team to Orion. Ready for transport. =A=
