Mission: The Devils Snare

[OLD]
Just then another group was taken off-guard by the two Kara had sent around behind. The fight was brief and her team victorious. She grinned again and looked around for more pirates. At the moment, there were none, so she continued to watch carefully. She suspected they were still out there, regrouping and waiting for her to slip up. But she wasn't about to give them the satisfaction.
[NEW]
The pirates on Damon's side had also learned to keep their heads down. The concentrated fire of the deployable SAWP and the deadly accuracy of the injured Marine were taking their toll on the enemy line. Their advancement had effectively bled dry.
Damon snapped off a few more shots before looking to the field radio again. "Commander," he responded in a very collected manner despite being under heavy fire. "We have a situation. We have people trapped in a cave and I don't think explosives are going to be enough to get them out. In addition, I have a squad here under heavy fire from a large number of enemy hostiles."
"Got it. A team of engineers is on the way. Pop a beacon for us." Sheridan was on his way he had two good engineers a bag of breech explocives and terraforming charges.
“We have stalled the enemies advance for now, but another squad of Marines would go a long way to reinforce our position here. Also, since explosives likely won't be enough to blast through the rubble, a couple of Type 6 mining phasers would be better suited to the job. I'm dropping the beacon now."
He crouched down and jogged a few meters to an empty spot of land near the cave's entrance. After flicking the switch to the beacon he placed it on the ground. Once he was satisfied that it was working properly, he rushed back to his cover and began firing at the enemy to divert them from the incoming guests.
As the small group arrived they all hit the deck and the three marines and two tactical officers fanned out to protect Sheridan and the engineers. John had a basic direction and started out...
Sheridan saw Kara first and hailed her over, seemed fairly quiet at the moment, the engineers humping along with their equipment. Sheridan jumped out of his boots as one of the security officers saw a gunman run across the trail they had just came down and brought him down hard with a full burst of auto fired ballistic rounds that echoed for a mile.
John Tapped his combadge, "Damon where are ya?" He was helping the engineers with the equipment as they arrived to the front of the cave entrance... A few more rounds echoed of the canyon walls farther up the trail behind him and he could here some muffled yells for someone to drop a weapon. It sounded like the Marines he brought were getting the upper hand.
Kara hurried over to the XO, after ascertaining that it was safe trying to shoot them. "Good to see you, sir. The Commander has done a good job, sir. He's over this way, if you'll follow me..."
Damon heard the Commander's call, but he was in a bit of trouble at the moment. Seeing the new group of Federation officers materialise behind the Marine line whipped the remaining pirates into a frenzy. They were getting bold and began slowly moving forward. What was worse was that the injured Marine was fading quickly from his wound. Damon moved under a steady line of fire over to the man. His eyes were heavy and his rate of fire had dropped dramatically, blood had soaked the entire side of his fatigues, and it was obvious from the grimace on his face that the pain was wearing him down quickly.
"You are one tough son of a bitch!" Damon said as he added his carbine's fire to that of the Marine's rifle.
The Marine laughed weakly over the sound of his rifle. Damon looked over to the other Marine with the SAWP. He had already moved over to Damon's last position and just finished setting up his weapon once again. The Marine pulled the trigger and once again filled the field in front of him with weapons fire. Damon nodded to the man without his notice, a smart Marine who didn't need to be told to pick up the slack, a credit to the corps.
With the area under heavy fire, Damon gambled in favour of the injured Marine. He wrapped his arm around the Marines torso. "Time to go buddy. You deserve a break." With limited help from the man, Damon pulled him back a number of feet to better cover. He leaned him up against a rock. "You know what to do if they make it past us."
"Yes Sir." The Marine managed to grunt. He then lifted his weapon from the ground and propped its butt against his shoulder.
With a nod, Damon raced back and took up position behind the log. His hands tightened over the stock of his carbine and he let out a steady breath of air before rejoining the fight. He knelt up in a flash and caught an unsuspecting pirate no more than ten feet away by surprise. Damon was half a second faster as he pulled the trigger and killed the man where he stood. “Too close.†He muttered to himself. With a shake of his head he flashed his weapon to the right and began firing into the woods once more.
Kara led them by a circuitous route to where Damon was laying low with the other Marines. She had to be careful not to make any of them a target for pirates. Once, Marshall launched three grenades to keep a group at bay, taking out two of them. Finally they arrived. "Sir," Kara said, addressing Damon, "The cavalry's here."
“Good.†He said simply as he fired again at a pirate hiding behind a large boulder. “Have Marine’s reinforce this line, I count a dozen or more still over here. We need the corpsman, I’ve got a Marine bunkered around the corner and he isn’t in the greatest shape.â€
Kara used hand signals to get Marshall over to her location. She lay down some ground cover to protect him, then set him the task of weeding out the pirate nest.
Marshall launched two volleys of three rocket grenades each, quickly taking out al the pirates in the nest. Other pirates nearby ran for cover and that gave Kara time to get the wounded Marine to safety.
After making sure that the Marine front was situated, Damon shuffled over to where the Commander knelt. "Commander." He acknowledged with an outstretched hand. "Have we started drilling yet?"
John took his hand, "Drilling has begun, who's trapped down there..?
Damon shook his head. "Lieutenant York and a number of Marines. They were investigating an alien machine of some sort."
Damon considered saying more, but he wasn't sure if his emotions might betray him. He was very concerned for Samantha's safety. He had no way to know what the extent of the cave in was, she might have been caught up in the collapse. Even if she hadn't, their oxygen supply could run out before the drill gets to them.
By way of avoiding any more questions, Damon turned and walked away from the Commander. His next few steps found him near where the Starfleet engineers had just set up the sighted drills. He watched as the drill began to hum slightly a second before a brilliant light lanced out and struck the rubble. Great gouts of smoke poured out of the hole it was creating as the rocks and soil began vaporising under the sustained blast.
