612 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Deadly Diplomacy
Location: mess hall
Timeline: back log

Lieutenant Brown walked down the corridor her eyes glued to a PADD reviewing a list of systems needing routine maintenance. Top of the list was the long range sensor array. Last time it was adjusted she had sensor ghosts on the aft quarter for weeks. "Computer, where is Lieutenant Syed?" she aksed.

[Lieutenant Junior Grade Syed is in ten forward.] the computer replied.

Several minutes and a short turbo lift ride later, Austin walked into Ten Forward and quickly located the new operations officer. "Am I disturbing you Lieutenant?" she asked stopping a respectful distance from the table she was sitting at.

Maryam looked up in surprise, taken out from a place deep inside her mind. " Sorry, sir --? Ah, no, you're just fine, sir." She replied quickly, rising from her chair. " How can I help you?" I have to stop getting so distracted. It's really effecting this work. The important work. She thought to herself. Before her mind could slip back into the dilemma of the old mission her fresh start had given her hope to forget, she stopped herself and smiled apologetically. " Sorry, sir. I'm just a little side-tracked today."

Austin smiled warmly and sat down. "No need to apologize, you aren't on duty at the moment. I wanted to meet you. I was hoping I could get your help recalibrating the long range sensors " she smiled again hoping to put maryam at ease.

" The long range sensors? Of course." Maryam nodded, relaxing a little. " I need to get acquainted with this ship anyway- the only other ship I ever served on was a lot smaller. A lot. smaller." she repeated, to herself. " It was a Defiant class." She explained to Austin. Something occurred to her, and she motioned to the chair beside hers. " Would you like to sit, sir? Or should we go over there now? I have no problems with either option!" she added quickly.

"Thank you." Austin replied with a nod as she sat down. "Defiant class. pretty tight quarters those ships. The Engineering principals are pretty much the same, with maybe the exception that the Galaxy class; despite their age have somewhat better long range resolution over the Defiant class."

" The defiant class is a ship for ants compared to this one." Maryam emphasized, waving a hand. " Well, that makes sense. I look forward to fixing them...so, how long have you been on the Calypso?" She continued. " I haven't got to know anyone on this ship yet, not properly."

Austin laughed at the comment. "My training cruise senior year was on an old defiant class. Never did get use to those bunks. don't even get me started on what passes for a jefferies tube. I only transferred to the Calypso recently myself. I've been aboard several months. She's an old girl, but she is sturdy."

" Well that's good to hear." Maryam giggled. " I have to admit, I like the extra room a lot. And we get a lot less action than a Defiant class, don't we? When I first joined Starfleet I looked forward to it but I've had my fair share at this point."

"I guess that depends on one's definition of action. we may not get into as many fire fights, but my time aboard so far has been anything but dull."

" Tell me about it! No - really," Maryam laughed as she realized, " Tell me the stories."

"well full stories might be something for another time, but I will say that we have had everything from full ship black outs, to assassinations. "
