Mission: Deadly Diplomacy
ON
Jayna was in Intel, basically babysitting the office while Remy and Logan did something official. She wasn't sure what it was as Remy didn't feel it was any of her concern, so she passed the time changing the UFP logo to a game of tic-tac-toe in a variety of garish colors. For the Chief's office, she added music and made the tiles look like smiley faces. Batiste's reaction would definitely be worth the trouble she was bound to be in when he saw what she'd done.
Just as she finished, the comm chirped. "Science to Intel."
Science? It wasn't often that Science had need of Intel. "Intel here, what's up?" Jayna asked.
"This is Sheldon in Stellar Cartography. I just received an odd message. I'm not sure where it's from, but it was hidden in a data packet. You know, the data we get all the time to keep our star charts and stellar information up to date. If we don't, well, then we could warp into a real mess if our data was too old."
"Yes," Jayna said a bit impatiently. "I have actually read about how Stellar Cartography works." It was for an undercover assignment, and she only needed to know how to work the computer and act like she knew what she was doing, but it was something.
Sheldon's tone grew a bit huffier. "Well, I recognize the code as one science uses from time to time to send messages to our people in hostile areas. So it's not stolen by anyone. You know, similar to what you use, but different so it doesn't need to go through official channels. Well, I got this message from someone who used to be on the Calypso and I think you should read it."
"Someone who used to be on the Calypso?" That intrigued Jayna. "Send it over and I'll have a look at it."
"Well, you really should come down here so you can see how I found it," Sheldon said. "It was rather an impressive bit of logic and deduction if I do say so myself."
"I'm very impressed that you found the message," Jayna said, trying to sound impressed. Well, she was impressed, but she still needed to see the data in Intel. "And I'll be sure to put in my report that you were the one who discovered it, but I need to use some of the equipment here to further analyze the information, so it would be best if you sent it to me."
"Well, I can't argue your position. Sending the message. Don't forget to give me credit. Science out."
Jayna first looked over the message to check its encryption code and markers. It had the correct Federation markers with a secondary science encryption. However, upon comparison to her database, she found that it had a third encryption code that came from the Calypso's science department. Actually, it looked to be one created by Commodore York when she was head of science. That made her sit up and take notice. She found only two people on the ship who used that particular encryption code. One was the Commodore, one was her Assistant at the time.
Finally, she looked at the message itself.
"This is Ronnie Lancaster formerly of the USS Calypso. I heard we're nearby. Can I help in any way?"
Jayna raised an eyebrow. This was most interesting. Most interesting indeed. She sent a quick message to Logan. "Mira to Logan. I have something for you when you're free."
This new turn of events opened up a whole realm of possibilities as to how they could catch the Caitian and still keep Wolfe's cover intact.
She began to mentally list the possibilities while she waited for Logan to arrive.
