Mission:
Deadly Diplomacy
Location: Planetside
ON
The away team beamed down to the planet again, this time with a clear task: take out the power source for the cannon and get back to the ship before they were discovered.
"Okay," said Arnon looking around at the various officers, NCOs, and enlisted personnel. "Why don't we start with the basics, like who's in charge? That got a little confusing the first time around. Captain Bourne? Am I to be taking your orders this time out?"
Trent nodded his head enthusiastically. He had a lot of respect for Fleeties but in the last few hours he couldn't help but shake his head at how things were handled. He knew that the Captain would clear up things quickly.
Verdeth was a lieutenant in Medical but this was a major mission with Commando style objective. He was more than happy to be in the background.
"I can cover the six, I have been medical for elite forced a few times and know how to be quiet sir." Newmark relayed.
"Hey, I'm happy staying back," Maria said. "Illise knows where the power relay is. I suggest she lead us there and then we decide the best way to take it out."
"I'll happily follow Miss Hale," said Arnon. "Lead on, milady."
Illise called up the data on her tricorder and triangulaged their location based on her previous readings. "The reactor is 523 meters due east from our present location." she told the others. She continued scanning. "Power levels are still rising, 67 percent and climbing at a rate of 2 percent per minute. We have just over 16 minutes before the canon will be ready to fire again." The finality in her tone stressed the urgency of the situation. She started out in the direction of the reactor, tricorder actively scaning for dangers, and blade loosed in it's sheathe in case they should incountere any.
Bosley followed Hale, keping a keen eye out for any sign of trouble. At this point, he expected trouble to show up from around the next tree. He hoped not, but he expected it.
Maria stayed in the back. It wasn't the safest of places if anyone wanted to sneak up behind them, but she had her tricorder out and would notice if anyone got near.
Newmark knew how to move quietly, his old DI used to drill in his head; the Sergent Major often yell as a general rule, that to keep one's head moving as much as his feet so to know what is going on around himself. Newmark kept a good vigil over the surrounding.
"Can anyone scan for a power signature my Medical Tricorder is not of much use there?" Newmark asked quietly.
Maria nodded. "Sure. Just follow Illise." She indicated the direction, checking her chronometer. "Ten minutes left," she informed.
Bosley found the cable to the weapon and pulled out his knife and carefully cut the line. "Hey, can we rewire this thing?" he asked.
"I can," Maria said. "I'm familiar with this type of power supply." She quickly reconnected some of the wires, leaving the rest cut. If anyone tried to reconnect the rest of the wiring, they would short out the power supply and cause a lovely explosion. And it would look like an accident.
Newmark glanced at the work and nod; it was a brilliant way to make the enemy not suspect the Federation; it would be in the repair of the Main power connections that the feedback would cause the explosion. Making a last sweep of the area for tools and leaving the plate loose to show signs that it had been tampered with to draw attention to that section.
"Time is running out and we need to be away from here." Newmark hastened. "Newmark to Calypso, beam up Away Team."
The familiar sensation of a Transporter took hold of the team and they were no longer near the site. The team stood on the Transporter Pad in the gear, Newmark was quite happy that he did not have to bring back any wounded or corpses.
"We have two minutes to spare." Maria announced. "Good job, everyone!"
Newmark moved over to the small view screen to look at the site. The screen was quick to focus on the area just as the personnel were moving to the power connection. It seems that the power connections were easy to fix and the crew were rushed as they quickly made the connections.
The power surged through the connections, the command center had once called for the firing of the weapon as power surged to the main connections.
The resulting feed back through the system set off the intermix chamber that resulted in an explosion that cascaded through the power storage chambers that detonated in sequence until the entire complex was destroyed the center and some surrounding areas.
"I would say that is a successful Mission." Newmark said as he switched off the screen.
