Damon watched Sam walk into the hopper and he patted the seat beside him indicating that she could take it.

"How's it going out there?" He asked with a concerned look.

Sam sat down next to Damon. "It's going well. Two tents are set up. We've got a fire going and plenty of firewood. Corporal McCarthy is taking charge of the Marines outside." She paused for a minute to gauge Damon's reaction. "I've asked for a watch to be set. I think we'll be okay until morning." She put her hand over his. "I'll be sleeping in one of the tents. How are you doing?" She wasn't sure how he'd react to her sleeping in one of the tents, so she quickly moved on to another question.

He was quick to note that she would be sleeping outside but held back his reservations about it. She was experienced with the outdoors and would know what to do if there was ever a crisis. As much as he hated to admit it, he really wasn't in a position to be able to protect her in his state as it was.

He cleared his head of these thoughts and responded to her. "Good, I think. I've broken a lot of bones in my time. Breaking my head is kind of new, though I'm sure some people would argue that fact." He smiled.

"I'm glad. I was worried," Sam admitted. "I'm glad you're doing better." She was still concerned, but trusted the doctor. And she trusted Damon.

Damon's smile vanished and he looked over to where her hand covering his. He turned his hand and held on to hers, giving it a light squeeze. "I'm sorry if I scared you."

"It wasn't your fault," she assured him. "At least you're here and you're doing better."

"Yeah." He stated simply. ~This time~

~I heard that,~ she replied, telepathically. ~Just be careful.~ She knew being in Starfleet carried risks, but she didn't want to think about what might have happened with the shuttle crash. "I'm sorry about Chris. I hope Alex was told."

"I heard she had been notified." He said as he mentally chastised himself for letting his thoughts get the better of him. "I was asleep when she was told, so I don't know how the news was taken." He let a moment pass before continuing. "I guess I have some calls to make when I get back on board the Orion. The families of the two dead Marines need notifying as well..."

"We both do," she amended. As commander of the mission, she would have to contact Chris' next of kin. "As for Alex, I asked Corporal McCarthy to be sure she was told. You needed to rest."

Damon nodded solemnly. "Thank you." He leaned his head up against the bulkhead. "Have you ever made the call before?"

Sam squeezed his hand. "No," she said softly. "I've never made the call before."

Damon had. In wartime people always knew in the back of their mind that there was the possibility their loved ones wouldn't make it home. Yet, when the call was made it seemed there was one common denominator, they were all shocked by the news. It was worse in "peacetime". Damon's first call was just over a year ago and it was an experience that scarred him to this day.

He looked over to her, not wanting to tell her how hard it was. Instead he opted for a truth in a hushed tone. "There are no 'right' words."

Sam nodded, grateful for his understanding and support. "Thanks." She would deal with the task when they got back to the Orion. For now, she was glad they were doing as well as they were.

McCarthy made her way through the sentries and headed off to the overwatch position. She had found a small rock face that she was easily able to scale and had set up the position on the peak to give them a clear view of most of their surrounds.

LT York was right, the camp had to be moved to a more secure area. ~I wish we had used one of the new Firefly Hoppers, at least all the pods were equipped with security sensors, the rest of the guys could all be asleep by now~ McCarthy was lost in thought and almost walked right past the rock face.

~Damn Jethro and his "an Observation Team, will be set up whenever Marines are on the ground" crap~

Reluctantly, Sam left Damon and began to make her rounds of the camp before settling down for the night.
