980 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Deadly Diplomacy
Location: Chief of Security's Officer

Thaddius approached the Chief of Security's office after speaking with York. He could tell from her body language she was preoccupied, either with the diplomatic function or the reassignment of her XO. Either way Thaddius had to make the most of the opportunity he had been given. The Calypso was a prestigious ship, a blessing for an assignment. He hoped to one day win the trust of Commodore York.

Kela sat at her desk looking through numerous reports and files on several pads. She was looking for a pattern. A possible lead that someone may have been killed like this before. Possibly there was an old clue from an older file she could use that might help in some way. Her mind was working a warp nine, so there was no way she would be able to hear the door to her office open.

Thaddius entered the room with footsteps that would surely be heard by anyone in the vicinity as his large feet planted themselves firmly on the floor with each step. He approached the Chief of Security's desk towering over the female whom was much smaller in comparison to the six foot giant before her. "Good day Lieutenant, my name is Thaddius Storm and I have been sent here by your Captain to assist you should you need help with this diplomatic conference. I trust it has treated you well thus far?" he said smiling at the woman.

Kela threw one of the PADD's in the air, yelling something in Klingonese that would translate to Die slowly and without honor, Coward!. She paused for a moment. placing her hand over his face to regain herself before looked up to Thaddius with a half-hearted smile as her chest continued to pound from the sudden startle. "Your here for what now?"

"I'm here to help." Thaddius said with a snicker. "Before I came here I served in security investigations and I have assisted in many diplomatic functions. Would you mind if I had a seat?"

"I suppose I can't stop you from getting joining, or taking a seat, but your not the only one with a background in Security Investigations here." Kela replied with a bit of a smile as she let out a sigh, running her hand through her hair, combing it back with her fingertips.

"Really? Well it will be great to have someone who speaks the same language around. Too many confuse our role thinking we are either simple door stops or some sort of quasi-spook." Thaddius replied.

"Maybe you get confused for that." Kela replied quickly, looking at the PADD for a moment before looked back to Thaddius.

"I don't understand." Thaddius asked wondering if he had offended the woman.

"What I mean is maybe people think your're a quasi-spook, but not me." Kela added, leaning back slightly, taking her Raktajino in hand as she did so. "You have to admit, your sudden appearance on board does have many curious and a lot of people wondering as to how a replacement for a XO just seemed to show up so quickly. Make me wonder if you were dispatched before or after our former XO's murder."

"You and me both." Thaddius replied. "I was working as a consultant at Starfleet security when my orders came through. I was told I needed to report to the Calypso immediately. I was to report as the Executive Officer and that was the end of any details. The death of your former XO came as much of a surprise to me when I arrived as it seemed to have everyone else. I want to help you folks find the killer as much as anyone else."

Thaddius sighed.

"I understand my report time is not only coincidental but untimely. I hope to work to gain your trust and respect so we may all work to forge a healthy working relationship."

"So you don't doubt its in poor timing? Don't you find that a bit suspicious? Surely someone with your background in Security Investigations can see that maybe someone on the other end was far to quick in transferring someone over to play crowd control." Kela said before taking a sip of her Klingon iced coffee before continuing. "Like maybe someone had prior knowledge to her what was going to happen? Starfleet didn't even acknowledge our report yet before you were given your orders. None of that seems a bit too close? Too coincidental? Too planned?"

Thaddius nodded affirmatively. "Are you thinking that someone is trying to manipulate us? It would not be the first time Starfleet Command has been plagued by the vile stench of a traitor. It would also explain the vague transfer orders."

"Wouldn't be the first, would it?" Kela added. "But it does bring up the scariest question of all. Is Starfleet in danger of an inside threat."

Thaddius let out a soft laugh. "Let me tell you Lieutenant it is not all sunshine and rainbows at headquarters. Starfleet is always in constant danger from the inside. There is always a select few with nefarious intentions and we must do our best to be vigilant and quell these threats."

Jayna walked into security in time to hear Storm's comment. "And that is why intel is always busy. Paranoia and corruption."

She smiled at the two officers. "I'm here to pick up your report on the murders."

She waited while Sirel got the report and handed it to her. "Thank you," she told the security officer.

Then she turned to Storm. "When you haev a minute, I'd like to talk to you."

Thaddeus n nodded.

With a smile to both Sirel and Storm, Jayna turned and walked out.
