In the past few months, Doctor Bowen has not participated as Calypso's Chief Medical Officer after finding out that her mother passed away on Earth and she had to take a leave from the ship to be with her father for awhile. She will not retire or quit her position, but needed to take care of family. She left Doctor Hart to be the acting Chief until someone arrived to help out with the position.
Jason Hart was not ready for the position, but he didn't handle the Acting Chief's position badly but not perfect. It burned him out for a few weeks until a new doctor showed up. He has put in a request to step down as Assistant to be the medical doctor for awhile until he is ready to do it again...if he ever will be ready.
Two days ago, he was glad to get a memo from the Captain to give him a heads up that a new doctor will be arriving soon before he can change positions. He sat in the office in Doctor Bowen's chair with his feet on the desk and laid his head back to rest for awhile.
Dr. Ilse Frost entered the office in her quiet step. She did not heed what was before her and she was pretty sure that the corner of the desk was in the same place she had last left it. The woman carried a crate of petri dishes stacked upon another. They had arrived as part of the medical stock that had been transported aboard and needed to be logged in and then sent to storage for the labs to use. She moved and her hip caught on Harts foot. the crates then slid out of her grasp. She managed to safe one the other headed towards the floor and met it with a shattering sound.
The crashing sound caused Jason to jump out of his sleep and automatically stood from the chair, frowning. "Who...what...," his words didn't make sense when it came out because of his fogged brain. Seeing a woman in a lab coat, bent over whatever was on the floor, made him wonder why she was in the office instead of in the laboratory. He swallowed and went around the desk to see what was on the floor after seeing the lady's back. "You must be in the wrong place with these petri dishes, I didn't ask for these."
"No, but I did." Ilse said as she set the one box down on the desk and started to retrieve that other and stopped a light blush of embarrassment hit her face as she realized who she spoke with. Ilse had tried to remember each and everyone of the personnel in the Infirmary so she would know them by name. She stuck out her hand at Hart. "Hi, I am Frost"
He grabbed her hand and helped her up as he observed her face. Without any make-up, she has beauty like all women do. "I'd be careful...Frost? I'm Doctor Jason Hart...Acting Chief Medical Officer until a replacement." He let go of her hand and placed his hands on his hips, making him feel superior and in charge. With a boyish smile, "tell me, are you new here? I've never seen you around here." Jason looked at the floor before he looked up at her, "don't worry about that, I will call a maintenance for that."
The corners of Ilse's mouth went for a brief second in a flash of one of her smiles she gave to patients. "Forgive me Doctor Hart, I am Ilse Frost. The newest member of the team and I did need those petri dishes." She looked down for a moment and then bent at the knees to try and attempt to save any and picked up one and it crumbled in her hand and she sighed softly and let it go and stood back up. "I guess that maintenance really does need to be called. Glad I saved one box."
His hands slid down from his hips to relax at his sides and he hit his combadge to quickly call maintenance and ended it. He nearly bit the inside of his lips as he watched her bent down to inspect the broken petri dishes and revert his attention to the one box she was holding. "Would that be Doctor Ilse Frost? Are you suppose to be my replacement?"
Ilse shrugged and nodded "I guess so. I was under the impression that no one was leaving but that I was just another doctor in the mix of many. So, why are you leaving anyway?"
"I'm not leaving the ship," he leaned his hip against the desk. "I am stepping down as an Assistant Chief to have less responsibilities and to maintain my duties as a physician. Maybe you will soon take the position. I guess I'm not fully ready to be a Chief. I did my best, though." He glanced at the broken petri dishes again. "So, what were you growing in those dishes?"
Ilse raised an eyebrow and smirked slightly "Doctor, that simply means you should stay in the assistant position, so you can have more practice in your role as a physician. Those duties should never be taken lightly. As for those poor petri dishes..." Frost turned to look at the mess on the floor " They contained a extremely contagious viruses in them of the air born variety. First symptom is the desire to eat ice cream with chocolate chip cookies. The second is a horrible need to reach that itch you can never quite get to in the middle of your back." Ilse watched his expression to her response. She tried extremely hard not to burst out laughing. Though the corners of her mouth twitched.
He stood up straight and felt fear coming. He frowned, "Conta...contagious?!?" Seeing her smirking, he realized that she wasn't being serious so he backed down. "I can still practice as a physician without being an assistant...don't judge me." His male ego kicked in. "I am very good at...", seducing he thought to himself, "bedside manners and calming patients."
Isle was taken aback slightly, she hoped that she had not offended him. She had simply wanted him to know that he did not have to step down, if he was comfortable in that position. "I would never judge, Doctor. I also bet your patients love your beside manner." She flashed another of her smiles "and I may need help calming a patient or two especially after I scare the day lights out of them and tell them that they have horrible bugs crawling around inside. The ones no one can see." She glanced at him and smirked her eyes danced with humor. "Oh well, I guess I should get the rest of my saved Petri dishes to the lab for those viruses I will create." She turned to walk away and paused to turn back at him "You haven't seen the Chief around anywhere have you? I really should check in with her."
Feeling that she sounded like giving an apology, he brushed it off. "Okay. Too many of my patients...females, actually...bat their eyes at me. It doesn't bother me if my appearance is attractive to them." He took a pause when she asked where the Chief was. "She's on a family medical leave...went to Earth a few days ago. So, the position is in limbo for now and they made me on acting Chief." Jason went around his desk and took a seat. "I'd be careful with making viruses." He gave her a smile when he had a thought of her in bed. He created a cough to clear his mind. "Well, I better get back to work...that maintenance should be here any minute."
"Acting Chief, suits you Doctor Jason Hart." Ilse said as she glanced back once more. "I'll see you around somewhere." She seriously hoped it wasn't in his mind. Her cheeks burned bright pink at his thoughts.
"Great," he watched her leave quickly and did not see her face. Jason took a deep breath and went through some of his medical notes on a couple of PADDs laying on his desk. I will probably see her again, he thought.
