Mission:
A Pirate's Life
Location: Various
[CONINUED]
[OLD]
"Now. I suggest that these be placed in Ten Forward, for everyone on decks nine through nineteen, since there's no power there anyway. Cargobays, three, four and five. Sickbay, The Bridge and Engineering. I'm sorry for being so straight with you, but we need to get people moving now and those units up and running. Only then can I start the shutdown procedures, and then after that I will have to completely purge every sub-routine and command code in the computer core and wipe it clean. Its not going to be a simple turn it off and turn it back off again job, this is a Starship not a Tricorder".
[NEW]
"Lieutenant you gave me an estimate of atleast an hour and now it seems you are telling me a completely different story. Why did you not account for all this in your initial estimate? You do realize this is a galaxy-class starship and not a shuttlecraft? You will be more concise with your estimates in the future." Vance replied frustrated.
"Make the necessary preparations and report back to me, I will give the order then. Now I suggest you get to work, you have already wasted enough time as it is."
"The shutdown, an hour yes. At least Commander. But not the preparation for it. But yes sir, I'll go start sir" Jourdan said turning away and walking into the chief engineer's office. She was clearly not happy, she walked over to the console and smacked her fist onto it hard enough for the computer to bleep a few times and make the screen flicker. Why did command officers always want things done by those below them. Sometimes she hated being the one making sure the ship kept working all the time.
Just as she was going to start the preparations for the shut down, the lights in Engineering flickered out, then all the consoles died and all power from the deck drained. Jourdan stepped out into the main section, still lit by the blue of the warp core.
"So, then. Could this get any worse?" she asked out loud to the everyone else in the room. Then all of a sudden there was a draining sound and behind her, the warp core shut down leaving them all stood in pitch darkness.
"You had to say it, you just had to say it didn't you Jourdan!" she said to herself. She stormed back into the pitch black office, the sound of crashing could be heard loudly.
"WHY DO WE HAVE CHAIRS ANYWAY!" you could hear her shouting, along with other words, most of them of the profanity.
"LIEUTENANT!!!" Vance's voice boomed across the darkened room. "If you cannot conduct yourself in a manner befit of a Starfleet officer and do you job competently then FIND ME SOMEONE WHO CAN. Get those support units ONLINE and TURN THESE LIGHTS BACK ON!"
Vance clinched the sides of her temples biting her lip to prevent her from whimpering. The headaches were returning....
Jourdan muttered some well chosen words under her breath about the commander. Did she expect her to pull off miracles? She managed to feel her way to the emergency locker and click it open, pulling out one of the emergency lanterns she turned it on and walked over to the Engineering pool table with it.
"This will have to do for a while until I get the power back to these consoles" she said. "But I'm going to have to break the rules to do so" she explained pulling out a laser spanner from her pocket and walking over to the room's main power conduit cover.
"I don't care if you have to knit a new warp core....." Vance shot back.
"Fine. Give me ten minutes" She said as she started to cut through the conduit cover.
"I'll get to science then," Ronnie said, hurrying out the door before anyone could stop her.
[Main Science Lab]
Khalpek was working hard to get everything that would fit in a stasis pod shoved into one or another. There was only one experiment that was going to be a total loss, but it could not be avoided.
When she activated the internal power cells on each of the pods, the field shimmered into place and she breathed out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding.
She put the breather up to her mouth with one hand, and pressed in the sequence of commands to shut down the backup power system with the other. Hopefully, power would be restored, or someone would get to her before the breather ran out.
Ronnie arrived near main science and was a little surprised to see that the power was out. She had her own rebreather, but most of the ship still had oxygen and would for the next little while. Hopefully the problem with the ship would be fixed before it ran out.
She was pleased to see that all but one of the ongoing experiments had been contained. That one, unfortunately, would have to take its chances. There was a 50/50 chance it would survive a power outage.
She ran to her office and gathered a few things she might need for later.
[Engineering]
Jourdan was busy under the console doing something that shouldn't be done. She rerouted the power from the rear phaser arrays into the engineering power buffer, as a result the power to the consoles lit them up. She turned to vance.
"I've shunted the power from the rear phasers to engineering. However, this won't last long, We probably have a few minutes until the power relay overloads" Jourdan explained.
"What was the purpose of re-routing power for the sake of only maintaining it for a few minutes yet causing more damage to the ship? Alexandra asked crossing her arms in frustration.
Jourdan began to work on the shutdown process.
"Commander, engineering and security teams are handling the emergency life support units. However I have a slightly different problem I overlooked" She said. "Once we shut down the computer we will need an independent power source in order to power one console, and we can't use the emergency batteries as they are linked to the computer systems" Jourdan explained.
"Do we have such a device onboard Lieutenant?" Vance asked gritting her teeth growing more and more annoyed by the lack of solutions the Chief was bringing before her.
Jourdan thought for a few moments.
"Wait a minute. We have something on this ship that we can use to generate power, however I will need to send an engineering team to fire her up, literally fire her up" Jourdan explained.
"Make it so and make it quick."
"Commander. We have a steam train aboard. And a make shift rolling road, put them together hook them upto a generator and run that train and we can generate enough power for an independent power source. And if the Borg Virus can affect a mechanical steam powered locomotive then slap me silly and call me Larry!" Jourdan explained.
"I assure you the virus will have no effect on your toy. Next time I would suggest you present these solutions with the problem so as to make yourself not seem completely incompetent. Get this ship online Lieutenant!"
