Mission: The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Location: Borg Rhombus

ON

Intruders detected, Grid forty-seven, Sub-Junction thirteen.

All drones converge on the designated sector. Assimilate all intruders. Vance commanded to the drones. She left her station to oversee the assimilation of the intruding federation personnel.

Gunny Tosh led his team down one of the side junctions, searching for signs of the device. "Billy, anything yet?" he asked the corpsman on with the scanner.

"Yeah. It's down two passages and to the right. Then a left. There's a machine at the end. That's one of 'em," Billy said.

"Roger. Weapons ready. Remember, don't shoot untless they notice you. Walk casual."

The half dozen Marines nodded. They had no idea how to walk casual, but they'd do their best. Each one held his rifle at the ready, watching carefully for any signs of recognition.

Several Borg passed them, but none seemed to notice.

They turned right and noticed a patrol walking purposefully towards them. "Move aside," Tosh whispered. He stepped into an alcove and watched eight Borg pass him without a glance. Four of his men were also passed. Unfortunately, the last one had ignored his order and stood, rifle raised, in the middle of the passage.

The Borg didn't even stop. One raised his fist and injected the man, stepping over his inert body and moving on.

Tosh swore under his breath. The private didn't even know what hit him. When the Borg passed, Tosh put a transporter tag on the kid and turned to the others. "Nothing we can do now. Once we finish our mission, we can transport him back to the ship. If we fail, it wont' matter what happens to him."

Each of the Marines had received a sub-dermal tag that would make it easy to be located once the shields were down, but a second tag wouldn't go amiss. And maybe if the Borg found the first, they wouldn't notice the second.

Tosh picked up his rifle and continued on his way. "Billy, where to now?"

"Down there, end of the passage," the boy said, his voice shaky.

"Suck it up, Marine," Tosh ordered. His pace quickened as he approached his target. There it was, looking remarkably like a giant vacuum cleaner with a dozen attachments. He pulled out three charges, set the timer for five minutes, and carefully placed them on the device. "Move it! Move it! Move it!" His rifle slung over his shoulder, he almost ran down the corridor, turning away from where they'd come in hopes of finding another target. He also didn't want his men to see the Private again.

"Okay, Billy, start scanning for a second target."

[Later]

Billy was in the lead when they turned a corner and almost ran into Mangalia. "Major!" he said, stopping suddenly. Samson, coming up behind him, didn't stop in time and bumped into Billy. "What the..." He looked up to see what made Billy stop. "Major! Sorry, sir! Did you take out the device?"

Find them my loves, find them and assimilate them. Let them learn what the boundaries of humanity have deprived them of. Let us wrap them in our embrace, to make us better. Find them before they destroy us!

Leo heard the call from the Borg leader, and had almost been run into by the Intruders They are here. Air Purification Three he whispered to the hive mind. Lowering the TR style rifle he raised a hand to assimilate the two men before him "Welcome to the Borg. Resistance is futile." Catching the corpsman, Leo quickly injected him with the nanites, before looking at the Gunny. "Two choices. Live a perfect life, or die."

"Eat lead, Major!" the Gunny yelled as he emptied his rifle into the Borg Marine.

Suddenly the filtration device and the entire wall behind Leo blew, throwing both men across the chamber and into the panels on the other side.

Several more explosions could be heard throughout the Rhombus. Emergency lights flashed on and a warning klaxon began to wail. At the same time, the altered nanites began to activate. Throughout the ship, Borg slowed and headed for their regeneration stations.

Master Sergeant Kallas checked his military tricorder. Mission accomplished. Time to bug out. He tapped his combadge. "Kallas to Calypso. The fox is in the hen house." Now, to lay low until the Calypso could beam them home.
