Mission:
The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Location: CO's Quarters
Captain's Log: Stardate 66657.46
We're finally back on the Calypso. If my count is accurate, we were on the mining planet for 47 days. I have begun referring to the planet -- and my stay there -- as Purgatory. Fitting in multiple ways.
The mission, if you can call it that, was primarily a success. We found Damon alive; but it cost the lives of three of my crew. They were good people. I will forever be grateful for their sacrifice in helping me recover my First Officer. I would not have come out of the mines without him.
The crew of the Von Braun did not fare so well. Only 11 survived. Most perished in the battle with the Orion Pirates. A far more merciful death than those who died in the mines.
[A long pause]
I still hear the clang of metal hitting rock in moments of silence. And the smell of burning rock and debris. I've bathed a dozen times and an still smell it on my skin... It will fade, with time. Being back home is helping. Being with Damon is helping more.
[Another long pause]
On a side note, I've kept the clothes and weapons Apu found for me as a memento -- not that I need anything to remind me of what happened there -- but I hope that, in time, I will see them as a symbol of my passage through the Refiner's Fire.
Damon and I got married on the Euphrates. Captain Kellen was happy to do the honors. A simple ceremony, but neither of us wanted anything fancy. We're keeping it quiet for now, choosing to wear our rings on chains around our necks. We know, and that's enough.
The Captain was gracious enough to give us a lot of time on the holodeck as a wedding present. We kept to ourselves for the five days it took to get back to Starbase Typhon. It's been a very long time since Damon and I had that much time alone together.
Tomorrow we begin mandatory medical and psychological evaluations. I know they're important, but I'm eager to get back into space and move forward. I still have a lot to catch up on, both personally and professionally.
There's much to do, but I find myself putting work aside to spend time with Damon. We visit the arboretum every night and take long walks on the holodeck. I'd almost forgotten how much I enjoy walking in the woods. And waterfalls.
York out.
