Mission: The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
ON
Sam tapped the comm channel in her ready room. "This is Commodore York. All personnel, leave is canceled. Report to your stations. We leave in 30 minutes. Senior staff to the conference room in five minutes. York out."
She checked the console. 132 people were still on shore leave. Sam sent each a message to return immediately. Anyone who didn't make it would have to wait on Athena until they got back. With the current crisis, there was no time to wait for stragglers.
She touched the new pip on her collar. It felt strange and unnecessary. But as far as she was concerned, it made no difference. She was Captain of the USS Calypso. Rank didn't affect how she performed her duty. With a sigh she shook her head and headed for the conference room.
[Conference Room]
Sam was the first to arrive. Good. That gave her a few moments to get herself a glass of juice and call up information on Tiberius IV before the others arrived.
As Lieutenant O'Dell was recovering in sickbay, Ronnie walked into the conference room in his stead. "Good to see you smiling," she said as she took her seat.
"Good to have a reason to," Sam replied.
Damion walked into the conference room. After spending a good couple hours with a counselor and a doctor, he was feeling slightly better. He still couldn't shake the memories of that place, as well as his feeling of its aftermath. Even walking the corridors was difficult. Being able to sense the thoughts and feelings of people as they walked passed. Sensing how they changed from that wretched place. Even as he walked in, he looked over to Sam and Ronnie quickly, only limiting his eye contact. He hadn't seen or spoken to either of them for a while out of fear of what he had done while he was there. It was hard to keep telling himself that it wasn't him, because deep down inside, Damion knew better.
Ronnie hadn't seen Damion since they arrived back on the Calypso. All of them had been wished away for a series of examinations. Damion, unlike most, was kept away from the rest of the crew. She smiled brightly, happy to see him. But her smile quickly faded as he was clearly avoiding her.
[Engineering]
"Okay everyone" Jourdan said looking at the engineering staff. "I want you all behind the blast doors. I'm going to give the warp core my own personal inspection" she said. Everyone in the room backed away, they all knew that Jourdan loved her engines and wanted a personal chief engineer's look at the core.
Jourdan tapped a button and the door came down closing off the warp core chamber from the rest of engineering. She approached the warp core which had been tuned up. As she pulled out the dilithium crystal craw she sighed.
"What have they done to you baby?" she asked quietly. "They've been in here changing things haven't they. Well don't worry, mummy's home" she said. She did some meddling with the crystals before closing the draw.
"Plus, I've missed you!" she said giving it a slight hug. She looked around to make sure no one was watching. She tapped the button again and the door rose up.
"Okay, we're all safe" Jourdan said.
=A= Engineering to bridge. Ready to start the warp core up and start using our own power =A=
"Bridge to Abbott. Go ahead."
Jourdan began to bring online the warp core. The soft humming of the core began slowly and then began to get faster and faster.
"80%" Jourdan said.
"90%"
"100%"
"Bridge. Core is online, we're running at 100% power. All systems are online and showing green across the board" Jourdan said. "That's my baby..." she muttered not realising the comm channel was still open.
"Give your baby a bottle and report to the conference room," the voice replied.
"Oh!" Jourdan said turning bright red. "Ermm, yes Commodore" Jourdan said closing the channel. She looked around at her staff all smirking.
"Not. A. Word." Jourdan said blushing as she strode out of engineering. As soon as she turned the corner she heard her entire staff burst out into laughter.
Marek had a grin on his face as he watched Jourdan leave and joined in the laughter when the doors closed.
"Oh that way funny," Mak said from behind Marek.
"Yes that was," Marek replied. He wondered how long this joke would continue until it would piss the chief off. The engineers around him kept giggling for a few moments before Marek, as assistant chief, cleared his throat and gestured for everyone to return to their duties.
[Conference Room]
Sam tried hard not to chuckle as the connection ended.
Ronnie, however, was less fortunate. She covered her mouth with a hand and looked away.
Doctor Leanne Bowen made her entrance, noticing a few people have showed up. She took an empty seat at the table and crossed her arms on the table. She gave a smile to the Captain, showing that she is ready to hear the verdict of this meeting.
Sam returned her smile. "Glad you're here."
Damon arrived with a smile on his face, however, he felt anything but happy. The new eye he had been issued was giving him trouble. Besides the near constant headaches, which the surgeons had assured him would go away, there was also the new information his brain had to sort through. Besides the visual aspect of it, there was plenty of technical data to decipher as well.
"Hope everyone is well rested from the shore leave." Damon said once he seated himself.
Sam smiled at Damon. She felt his headache and sent him a telepathic caress of comiseration.
Cam walked in not far behind Damon. He wasn't sure why he had been called up to this meeting, after all he wasn't a member of the senior staff, but he wasn't going to disregard an order from his new CO. giving a nod to the others assembled, Cam made his way over to one of empty chairs.
Sam nodded to Cam. "I'm glad you could make it."
Eamon walked in and immediately sensed some humour had been in the room. He felt sad that he missed it. The Inaran went to a free chair and sat down.
Sam checked her chronometer. Five minutes. She stood and looked at each of her senior staff. She tapped her PADD and a three-dimensional holographic image of Tiberius IV appeared above the conference table. "Tiberius IV is near Starbase Typhon. It's a desert planet. Some of you were here when we first explored it. The sand is deep and deadly. There are numerous volcanic rock formations that lead to underground lakes. Fifteen minutes ago the USS Columbia sent out a distress call. It is believed the ship crashed on the planet. Our job is to rescue the crew. The nature of the sand is such that nothing can be scanned through it so finding the ship will be difficult. Any questions?"
