Mission:
Subjugation
Location: USS Starseeker, Captain's Ready Room
ON
The doors to the Captain's Ready Room swished open in front of Hamish, who promptly entered. "You sent for me, Captain?"
"Have a seat, Lieutenant." Captain Etxeberri instructed Hamish. "As you know, the Starseeker is being decommissioned. Starfleet Personnel Management have been working on new assignments for the entire crew. You, Mr. MacGregor, are one of the few to have the advantage of choice."
"Sir?" Hamish asked, intrigued as to what was on offer.
"There are two assignments you could opt to accept. I'm fairly certain on which one you're going to pick, but I'm obligated to inform you about both."
Hamish nodded silently, indicating the Captain to go ahead.
"The first one - the one I advise you not to select - is an Executive Officer position. Sounds good, but trust me, it isn't. Sensory Outpost Zeta-23. I lived on a sensory outpost for three months until a Starfleet vessel had the grace to pick me up - it was during the Dominion War, and ships, naturally, were in high demand throughout the battle theaters. Anyway, I digress: My point is, it is dredgery. Nothing interesting happens, at all. Also, your wife would be reassigned somewhere else and there is no room for your daughter above the outpost."
Hamish interrupted: "You've made your point, Cap'n. The other assignment?"
"Chief Operations Officer, USS Calypso. Galaxy-class Mark II vessel. It would also be an opportunity for your wife - instead of an ordinary Science Officer, she could fill the position of Alien Archaeologist and Anthropologist. Need I go on?"
"No, sir, you really don't. The Calypso it is." Hamish smiled and nodded.
"Superb. All I need is your thumbprint, here. This will automatically negate your wife's other choice." the Captain informed him.
"Wait, wait, wait, hang on...what would my wife's other choice have been?"
Captain Etxeberri rubbed his forehead. "I really hoped you wouldn't ask that."
"I have, though." After a short pause, he pushed: "Well?"
"Assistant Chief of Science, USS Magellan, Sovereign Class. She'd take Leanne with her. This would only work in conjunction with you going to the sensory outpost."
"So, what, you think she doesn't deserve a say?" Hamish accused the Captain almost agitatedly.
"What does it even matter? She'd probably choose the Calypso anyway."
"It's a matter of principle, Captain. Besides which, I wouldn't want myself to be known as the man who destroyed his wife's career. I must consult her." he insisted.
"Well, call her up here, then."
Hamish did so: "Lieutenant MacGregor to Ensign MacGregor," he uttered as he tapped his combadge, feeling slightly silly at that, "please report to the Captain's Ready Room."
"Aye, sir." came the response.
In the meantime, the Captain got up. "Raktajino with three sugars, Mr. MacGregor?"
"You betcha, Cap'n." Captain Etxeberri proceeded to replicate himself a herbal tea, and the aforementioned raktajino for Hamish.
Not long after, the door chimes went.
"Come in!" the Captain beckoned, gesturing for the entering woman, Jeanette, to sit down. "Will you or should I?" he asked Hamish.
Hamish proceeded, thus answering the question: "Sweetie," he took her hand and looked into her eyes, "I need you to consider the following issue carefully: As you know, we are all being reassigned. It boils down to this: You could serve on the Sovereign-class USS Magellan as the Assistant Chief of Science, with Jeanette but without me. I would be on a sensory outpost, in that case. The other option is for me to go to the Galaxy-class USS Calypso, together with you and Jeanette. You would serve there as the Alien Archaeologist and Anthropologist."
Without hesitation, she said: "What a dumb offer! Of course I'll take the Calypso."
Hamish shook his head. "No, think about this for a moment. It's a great opportunity for your career."
"Nonsense! Leanne needs her father, and that's that. I'm sure another opportunity will come around some time. Besides, Alien Archaeologist and Anthropologist is already a step up."
"As you wish, dear." Turning to the Captain, he asked: "Is there anything else?"
The Captain swiftly replied: "Indeed. Your thumbprint here, Mr. MacGregor. And while we're at it, yours too, Ensign. Your assignment here on the Starseeker ends as soon as we dock at Typhon for mothballing."
