Mission: The Race for the Lost Treasure
ON
Samantha walked back into her ready room to file her report before the Calypso headed for their next stop. It had been a long mission and she was looking forward to something new.
The door to her office opened and she stopped, surprised to see someone unfamiliar standing there. She almost called security, but her curiosity got the better of her -- for now. "I'm Samantha York. And you are?"
He stood up from her chair and looked over to her with a smile on his face. "Captain Thayne Kilgore." He placed his hands behind his back as he walked around the desk slowly. "Of course, my new file will read Blackbeard on it." Kilgore stopped as he leaned against the desk. "You must be this ship's Captain?" He looked her up and down and laughed softly. "I must admit, you weren't what I was expecting."
"I wasn't expecting you at all," she said dryly. "I won't make that mistake again. How did you get in here?" Kilgore. The pirate Captain. She'd read his file. If he could get into her ready room without tripping the security protocols he was definitely someone to watch. She returned the favor and looked him over carefully, gently brushing against his mind to read his surface thoughts.
"You really think I can't get to where I want when I want?" Kilgore laughed slightly and then closed his eyes. She could feel he was a strong minded person. He was used to working with telepaths, so he was well trained in blocking them, but he knew he wouldn't be able to hold her off for long periods. "You will get nothing from my mind, Samantha. Starfleet Intelligence taught me very well."
"I'll get what I need," she countered. He was good, but she wasn't going to confirm that. She could wait for him to slip -- as he would. "So why are you here?" Might as well be direct with him.
"Darlng. Lets forgo with the mind games. I respect directness, so why don't you put away your Betazoid ability." Kilgore smiled and then crossed his arms over his chest as he heard her speak. "Two reasons. To retrieve what is mine and to let you know who you're dealing with." He spoke softly and then brought his hand slowly to the handle of his blade, watching her closely. "Give me access to your main computer, Captain. I want to know what's down there."
"First, being Betazoid is who I am, not what I do. I'm not going to ask you to stop being a blackguard." She smiled coolly. "What do I have that's yours?" She didn't react to his threat. He wasn't going to get into her computer.
"True, but you can keep from entering my mind, since you already know its not going to work." Kilgore began to slowly walk around her, step by step. He moved slowly as he watched her every move, getting a read on her character his own way. "Your transponder code. You see I have an interest in this ship, now. You caught my attention and with that, I plan on keeping an eye on you. For my own secret means. So kindly give me what I want and I will leave your ship."
"You want me to simply hand over access to my entire ship?" Sam shook her head. "I don't think so. Your record speaks for itself. You're not a man to be trusted."
Kilgore smiled and then laughed softly. "If they were true, would I be asking for it? Wouldn't I just take it? Don't believe Starfleet Propaganda, Samantha. All it does is get the wrong people killed." Kilgore took one step forward as he hit his combadge once. "Let's show her, shall we?" The office lights and monitors suddenly flickered and then stopped. "Who do you think really controls your ship right now, Sam?"
"I do," she said, not backing down. "Levue, find the Blackheart and lock it in a tractor beam. Trace Captain Kilgore's recent communication if you have to."
There was no response. "Really, Samantha? Did you honestly think I would come here without some escape plan? I always plan for the worst, Captain." He took a step closer to her. "I will ask once more. Transponder Signal, Captain. If you please." He bowed his head slightly, keeping his smile and elegant manor.
"No, Captain, I will not."
"Do you value life, Captain?" Kilgore hit his combadge again. "Bring me my Prisoner." He smiled slightly as Samantha saw the swirling lights of the transporter appear in front of him as the woman known as Morgana's image materialize. Kilgore let out a growl as he grabbed the woman by the hair and forced her to her knees. He pulled out his favorite Klingon Disruptor, which was turned in the front of his belt, and aimed it to the back of her head. "You read my file, Captain! You know this innocent life wouldn't be the first one I have taken, nor the last?" Kilgore laughed darkly as he tilted his head. "Is a simple set of numbers worth more than her?"
"It's not that simple and you know it. It's the life of one person versus the life of my entire crew. And, if you get into my computer, the lifes of countelss Federation personnel. Sorry, but I can't. I won't."
Kilgore serious look slowly turned into a smile as he slowly raised the disruptor. "Very good, Samantha. Very very good indeed. He held his disruptor up and then tucked it back into his belt. Morgan would, no doubt, have a smile of her own form on her face. Kilgore put his hands behind his back and then the smile slowly faded. "I already have what I want, Captain. The Typhon officer was more then forth coming about the information we needed on the Calypso. So I suggest, if Starfleet is going to start improving its security, it starts there."
Morgana laughed. "And for my part, I think you for the lovely information you gave me. It will be ... most useful," she smirked.
"Have you met my First Officer and Chief Of Science? Morgana Frey." He gestured to her and then his smile came back again. "You really should screen your passengers better. Thats the problem with Starfleet. No cure for your bleeding hearts. Always the first to take in wounded animals, with no worry on whether they are going to strike."
"She wasn't allowed anywhere without a guard. There were too many holes in her story. Sloppy, Captain, very sloppy." Sam wondered what information the woman could have obtained while not being left alone -- or given access to the computer.
"Sloppy? For what I gathered, I doubt that." He laughed and then ran his hand through his beard. She could hear a light squeak as Kirk, the monkey, ran out from a corner of the ready room crawl up his clothes, reached into his pocket, and then scurried up onto Kilgore's shoulder. The monkey's tail wrapped around his neck and let out another loud screech toward Samantha. Kilgore walked slowly towards her, his hand off his sword and now at his back. "You saw what I wanted you to see, Captain. I felt her role was played very well. She made her father very proud."
"Well, if you don't have high expectations," she said, shrugging. As soon as she could she'd start a thorough investigation to find out exactly what they have -- and how they got it. She'd also make it her personal mission to find out as much as she could about Kilgore and the Blackheart.
Kilgore stood there in front of her and smiled. He could still feel her trying to dig into his mind, so he allowed her in for a split second. She saw that he already knew the code and then she saw something else. An image of a young Kilgore holding onto a baby in the rain. He would look over his shoulder to a hospital on Risa. As he tucked the baby closer to his chest he began to walk away again. The monkey would jump onto his shoulder as the Risan hospital exploded behind them. The glass exploded from bursts of fire on two floors and then loads of people would run out as Kilgore turned a corner into a dark alley.
His mental block went up again very quickly. He let out a soft groan and then walked toward Morgana. "Give Damon my regards, Samantha. I'll look forward to meet him as well." Kilgore hit his combadge and then turned to face her. "Blackbeard to Blackheart. Three to beam up, standby to go to warp and raise shields."
"York to Levue, find the Blackheart and stop it." But she knew it was already too late. She went to her computer and began to search for anything she could find on Captain Kilgore, the Blackheart and his daughter. Had he killed his wife, or was that memory an act of revenge because she'd died? Too many unanswered question.
She sat back and closed her eyes. Her life had just gotten a lot more complicated.
