Duties of a Diplomat

1) Reading annals from the First Contact Office; doing research is important for a diplomat because they have to understand the varying changes in planetary and system interests. Most diplomats read annals or journals that hold information or scholarship on the cultures and customs, so that your ship's diplomatic corp department can effective explain and train officers and members on proper conduct with dignitaries and special guests.
2) Serve special guests and become host coordinator for their functions and meetings on the ship. The CDO does all that is necessary to assist VIPs and such with daily arrangements for negotations or important discussions with staff and the CO/XO officers.
3) Communicating with the sector diplomatic office because they send changes and amendments to diplomatic protocol because Federation interest changes. The intergalactic or interplanetary interest changes because the goals of ensuring national security change.
4) Offer suggestions and advise the CO and XO with anything concerning new cultures or unknown--obscure areas of space. Also, CDOs will sometimes become verbal and nonverbal language/communication interpreters during any hails or communications in a given situation.
5) The CDOs also oversee and administrate all actions and functions of the diplomatic corp department on their starship. The diplomatic office remains ready for any threat--especially war--so they can find ways to negotiate peace and establish peaceful concessions for Federation interest.
6) In addition, the CDOs affirm and establish the Prime Directive. These men and women ensure that the Federation upholds their creeds and represents the underlying the surrounding interest of the United Federation of Planets, however, the Prime Directive is sometimes broken *ahem* - face it, it happens.
