"No." Sam refused to accept that. "I'm not a clone." It would have to be her as she was the one who left the Republic. She stepped back from Damon and walked over to the couch and sat down. This was getting too bizarre.

[NEW]

Damon could see that the notion upset her so he was quick to take a seat at her side. He picked her hand up and put it in his. "Alright, so what else could be happening here?" He asked the room.

Commander Sam led Curzon over to a second couch and sat down. "A temporal anomaly?" If so, it could be her that was in the wrong place.

The two Sams looked at each other. "Only one thing to do." The other Sam nodded. They turned to the man next to them and, in unison said. "This could be dangerous. If something happens ..."

Damon snapped a look to both of them for their stereo performance. "You're s#!%ing me, right?"

Sam turned to Damon. "There's a risk that once we merge we won't be able to separate."

Damon shook his head. "I would rather their be a mystery than endangering you...either of you."

Sam looked at her counterpart, then back at Damon. "I need to know what happened."

Damon knew the look Samantha was giving him. It was the 'I'm going to do this anyways' look he had seen far too often. Only thing left for him to do was sit back and be supportive.

'Backpedal a bit,' interjected Bennett. 'What do you mean, 'merge'?' he looked at his own Sam for answers. It seemed that both could jump to the conclusion the other was thinking about and work from there. It was going to make for confusing conversations. Whilst fascinating in any other context, right now his only desire was to prevent the both of them from doing anything rash.

Sam turned to Curzon. "Basically, we'd have to open ourselves to each other mentally. While this is frequently done when bonding, it would be a lot trickier if we are indeed the same person. If we lose track of who is whom, we could get lost somewhere inbetween."

"I really wish you wouldn't have told me that," Damon groaned.

Shooting a look in Damon's direction, Bennett concluded he was being unhelpful. The man had not suggested anything useful in the time he had met him - not to Bennett's judgement anyway. He seemed content to chunter and blow at the situation. 'Can't you just talk it through? It might take longer, but it's safer, surely?'

"Safer, but a meld would only take moments and we'd know enough about each other to know where the differences lie."

He nodded unhappily, Sam probably knew best in this situation. 'If you think it's worth the risk then,' Bennett looked to the two for confirmation.

Sam didn't want to see Damon like this. "There might be a way to make it safer..." She glanced at her twin.

"If we had a tether," Sam agreed. She turned to Curzon. "If there was something that bound us to reality, it would make this safer. We'd basically have a lifeline back."

Bennett narrowed his eyes, thinking for a moment, then glanced over to the other man, 'how about me and him? Would we be tethers enough?' It was something useful they could both do in this situation at least ...

Damon nodded. "You often refer to me as your Imzadi" He said looking to his Sam. "I'm sure it's the same with them. It's much more than just a physical bond, right?"

Sam smiled. "It is indeed. And it just might work."

Imzadi. A significant thing. Bennett felt momentarily stung. His Sam had never called him that.

"Well, I ... um ... wasn't sure until recently you wanted..." She shook her head and switched to telepathy. ~You are my Imzadi. The first with whom I've felt both a mental and physical connection.~

Captain Sam nodded slowly. "If you were my tether, I would definitely find my way back to you. It would require a mental anchor." She gave him an impish grin. "A physical one, too, wouldn't hurt."

Normally Damon would have laughed at the notion. In this situation, however, he was entirely uncomfortable with what was happening. He gave her a weak smile before closing the gap and kissing her. Afterwards he embraced her and spoke quietly into her ear."Come back to me, okay?"

"Always," she whispered back.

'So,' said Bennett with a lopsided grin as he drew closer to his Sam, 'are you ready?' His faith in her was winning over, the nervousness and worry diminishing. The fact he had a part to play helped too.

"As long as you're here," she said. She took a deep breath and the two Sams faced each other.

For several minutes neither moved. Their eyes were unfocused as they lowered their mental shields and opened their minds.

Damon sat patiently beside her. He had seen this sort of thing before, however, it usually happened much faster than this. Still, he was confident that she could handle it, both of them could handle it. He simply just squeezed her hand and waited for it to end.

It was like seeing and hearing everything in stereo. Identical thoughts, identical actions, identical lives. Until college. A trip to Betazed, with catastrophic results. A decision to leave the Republic. Love. Loss. Choices. Two Republics. One Orion. Finally they began to pull away, but the mirrored thoughts made it hard to tell which thoughts belongs to whom, and how to separate the two.
