Sam was standing at her viewport, looking down at Michnar VII. The situation was quickly degrading and she was seriously considering stunning the entire city to stop the skirmishes. If the Marines didn't get things under control soon, she still might.
Her computer beeped and she turned to check the message. A new Intelligence officer? She quickly scanned through his file and smiled. Perhaps the fates were being kind to them. She tapped her combadge. "Lieutenant Wolfe, could you please report immediately to the Captain's Ready Room?"
Damion was already on his way to the bridge just as she spoke into her combadge. He stood in the turbolift, like he always does, looking straight forward and keeping a straight and serious face. He always kept this attitude when meeting a commanding personnel. "Never let them see who you really are unless you know they wont use it against you, Wolfe. Your duty is to those whom you trust and those whom you do not." He could hear Captain Strife's words echoing through his head as the doors opened up onto the Calypso's main bridge. Damion walked out like he had been there so many times, like he knew his way around even though this was his first time on this bridge.
He came up to the Ready Room doors and hit the chime to indicate he was there and waiting as he looked around, not bothering to make any eye contact with anyone on the staff just yet. "You are an Enigma, Wolfe. Always remain one until trust is established." He repeated in his head over and over again.
Sam, sitting at her desk, could hear the focused thought being repeated over and over. She paused, one eyebrow raised. "Come in," she said, curious to meet the person behind the thoughts.
"Hello, Lieutenant. I'm Sam York. I'm a scientist, I happen to like enigmas."
He walked in as the doors slide opened and looked over to her. He was taken back a bit to feel another Half Betazoid and Half Human in the room. He felt himself being read and looked over to the woman with a smile. "Your part Betazoid?" Damion smiled slightly but soon it faded. He was only accustom to one person who did that and that was Natalya, his sister. She did it in an almost annoying fashion that seemed to frustrate him, which he was sure she enjoyed doing. "Forgive me, amongst all the commotion in the transfer and picking up my assistant, I neglected to review your file to getting better knowledge of who I would be working with." He continued to walk in and slowly went up to her desk, his arms behind his back and hair in a ponytail. "Lieutenant JG Damion Wolfe, at your service, Ma'am." Sam could feel his mind slowly closing and blocking to her, refraining from her picking up any surface thought, unless he was comfortable enough to let her.
"Yes, I am and I don't pry. You were a bit ... loud," she said, answering his question. "Come in and have a seat. I'm afraid you've come in the middle of a situation and I can use your expertise."
Damion walked to a seat and sat down in front of her desk. "Just tell me the situation and I will see what I can for you, Captain." He said softly as he leaned back slightly in his seat.
Sam downloaded data onto a PADD and handed it to Damion. "We came here on a simple humanitarian trip. Instead, we find a planet of scavengers with over a dozen different types of technologies from different centuries and cultures; the former government was nearly wiped out by a man-made plague; the current government consists of the people who caused the plague; our people on the planet are under quarantine and and we've already stopped one riot one the planet." She gave the Lieutenant a mischievous grin. "How's that for a brief overview?"
"It's a lot to take in. You'll find more information on the PADD. What I need you to do is find out what happened with the former government, if the plague was caused by the current government and who should be in charge. We have one of the rebel faction on board. We can put you in contact with the current governor as well."
"I take it going there my way is out of the question?" Damion said as he picked up the PADD and began to look over the information provided. Given all his training he could probably get this done faster, but he had to learn to do things the Starfleet way.
"Yes. your way is out of the question -- unless under extreme circumstances," Sam chuckled. "Not even if the Chief of Security authorizes it."
"I assure you Captain York. Anything I do will be strictly for the benefit of containing the problem and flushing out who ever is responsible." He said softly and then nodded slightly. "However, any actions I feel should be used I will do my best to clear it with you before hand to ensure your approval and understanding of my execution." Damion smiled at her and then looked over the information on the PADD again.
"That's acceptable," Sam said. "Read over the information we've gathered so far. Talk to Lieutenants Lovok and Tramira. Talk to Miss Maralena. If you need to speak to anyone on the planet, we'll make the proper arrangements." She paused to look at Damion for a moment and to let the information sink in. "Is there anything you need right now?"
Damion stood up and put his hands on her desk and leaned forward a bit as he looked at her. "Only two things for the moment. Your trust that I will get us through this and lastly for my assistant to have complete access to any information collected on the incident to help in the investigation." He opened up back his mind as he smiled slightly to her. "If you would like, you can read my mind to ensure I have no other motives."
Sam stood and placed her hands on her desk, leaning forward to mirror Damion's posture. "If I had any questions about your ability, Lieutenant, you wouldn't be here. If I have any doubts about you in the future, I assure you, you'll know." Her expression was almost serious. Only a slight twinkle in her eye gave any hint that she wasn't. "And I don't need to read your mind to tell if you're lying. You'd give yourself away in a dozen other ways. That's just the easiest." She held his gaze for a moment before stepping back. "Yes, your assistant can have access to the data. There are a number of non-department heads who also have access to that information. Chief among them Lieutenant Wexler."
Damion just smiled slowly as he nodded. He knew it wouldn't take much to test the waters, or to get the Captain to react the way he was hoping she would, sending out all the right signs was all he needed to do. "Good, very good. Then I wont hesitate in getting this problem resolved as soon as possible. It will be a treat to work with you, Captain York." He turned around, deciding it was time to take his exit and get to work.
Sam watched him go, her expression pensive. He forgot his shields were down just enough for her to get a sense of his thoughts. The man was good, but he underestimated her. Just because she was accommodating didn't mean she was a fool. She wondered how he'd fit in with the rest of her crew. Only time would tell.
