A Surprising Communication

Samantha walked out of the bedroom dressed in her Starfleet uniform. She was beginning to feel like herself after her day in the cellar with Teenan Varik.

Thanks to Damon, she was making a quick return to normal and was mostly ready to get back to work. Ideally, she'd like to take a few days off and go camping on the holodeck with him, but the circumstances didn't allow for that. Maybe later, she promised herself, when this mission was over.

The first thing she needed to do was check the messages on her computer to see if there was something important before she made the rounds to the different departments to chat with her senior staff.

She was surprised to see that it was from Fleet Admiral Brent McGinley.

Commander York, I know you're busy with the peace talks on Turkana IV, so I won't take up much of your time.

Effective immediately, you have been promoted to the rank of Captain with all the rights, responsibilities and privileges thereunto appertaining.

Congratulations, Captain. Your Yeoman has the necessary paperwork, along with your new rank pip. Good luck and do Starfleet proud. McGinley out.

Sam sat in her chair for a moment, taking in the news. Just like that, she was a Captain. She noticed a small box sitting next to her console. Sam opened it and saw the new rank pip. It was considerate of her Yeoman to have the box here as this was likely to go to her quarters first.

Sam picked it up and placed it on her collar. A Captain. She shook her head in disbelief. She checked through the rest of her messages - it gave her mind a chance to assimilate the news.

There wasn't much there. A note from her parents telling her that her cousin Sophia had a baby boy. The rest weren't important.

When she was done, she turned off her console and headed back into the bedroom. She wanted Damon to be the first to hear her news.
