Jerry wasn't even sure what the thing was that he'd had beamed up. All he knew was that if he thought about it, he could still feel a phantom ache where he'd stubbed his toe on it before scanning it. He shook his head and pulled out his tricorder. "I think we're going to need to take it apart to figure it out. But I really don't think that's a great idea."
"Wouldn't you risk damaging it by taking it apart first?" Ronnie asked. "I mean, shouldn't we figure out what it is first, then take it apart?"
"That would be a great idea. Problem is, I've looked at everything our entire team did, and... I still know about as much as I did when I stubbed my toe on it. It's made of several different metals - at least one of which is hell to scan through, and it rebroadcasts EM transmissions on a set of frequencies, based on the fact that one place in it is an antenna. Unfortunately, where or what the input is, and what frequency it's on, is still a mystery. You have any ideas what we could do, Chief?" He hadn't looked at the Chief Engineer until now, and it was at this moment he realized he was in the worst possible element for him. He cleared his throat and looked around - he didn't need the Captain nearby to start yapping at him about responsibility and not asking out the Chief Engineer to his quarters when they had work to do.
She was busy looking over the item and simply shook her head.
~An antenna?~ Ronnie thought. "Have you tested the signal to see what it might be transmitting or receiving?" she asked.
Marek nodded at Ronnie. "I believe Lieutenant Lancaster is onto something there; maybe it's transmission contents will help us identify the device."
Ronnie looked to O'Connor. "Do you want me to test this with the device from Lieutenant Tovan? I'd like to see if the two tie together in any way."
Jerry looked at them and sighed lightly, trying to smile. "I'm game if you all are. I mean, what my tricorder picked up is that they both use the same materials, and the antennae probably broadcast around the same frequency. So, what the hey, let's power 'em up."
"Yes, sir," she said with a grin. "I will power 'em up."
Marek watched and waited patiently for something to happen.
Ronnie set up a level two containment field around the device, then set the scanners to pick up any signals sent from it. Finally, she sent a surge of power through the device to see if she could activate it.
The device began to hum and sent a quick burst of static. Ronnie watched carefully until the device again went dormant and quickly checked the scans. "It's a transceiver of some kind. It receives a signal and transmits it to another device. Presumably the neural implant."
She put the neural implant in the containment field and tried the experiment again. This time, she sent a short command, hoping it would be understood by the device. It sent another burst of static, which was picked up by the neural implant.
"Now what?" Marek asked then smiled. "Reverse engineer it?"
"Yea. That would be up to you guys," Ronnie said in response. "Or we can figure out how to hijack it." The last suggestion made her smile. It might be nice to figure out how to hijack the device and turn the tables on whoever was behind it.
"That would of been my next suggestion," Marek said with a giggle.
Ronnie just shook her head and looked at O'Connor. "I'll let you know the minute I find out anything."
