Sam had watched Damon with interest. She liked watching people as they browsed bookshelves. It said a lot about how a person felt about books in general. You could always tell a person who valued literature in general and books specifically. She was pleased to see that Damon treated the books with respect. As he sat down she returned his grin. "City of Culat?" she repeated, wondering what the significance of the city was.

"It's where I was stationed on Cardassia. I was just enlisted back then." He flipped the pages until he reached the pictures of the city and University itself. His eyes went wide in shock and he shook his head as a sigh escaped his lips. He leaned back and took in the sight. Beautiful gardens adorned the city streets and large statues could be seen in the courtyards. The University was a marvel of architecture with great sweeping "hooks" reaching out its roof. "Incredible." He said after a moment. He pointed to an aerial picture of the University. "This is where we had a field hospital and triage centre. Our barracks was located next to it because of space limitations. We would send out our patrols all through the city from here."
Sam ran her fingers through his hair as she looked from the book to his face. "I take it this is nothing like the place you lived in?" War did terrible things to architecture. It did terrible things to the landscape, too -- not to mention the people. She wondered what it looked like now...
"The shell of the building remained, orbital fire took out most of it. We cleaned up the grounds and used them for overflow staging." He remembered well what the area looked like and more so, what the people looked like. "They were devastated, the people that is. Every day I would hear them talk about what a great city it used to be, how beautiful it used to be. All I ever saw were ruins. I've always wondered what it looked like before the war...They were right, it was beautiful."
Sam gently touched the picture, sorry for the loss. "Yes. The cost..." She shook her head. As an archaeologist and historian, the loss was monumental. "I hope they were able to restore it."
"I have no idea, never went back. I decided on Cardassia that I was going to make the SFMC a career. I went back to earth after my enlistment to go to university and later apply for Officer school. I was deployed elsewhere after graduating. I almost hate to say it but, in a strange way, everything I saw there lead me to being here."
Sam nodded. "Sometimes it's interesting to look back and see what choices made the biggest difference in our lives. What brought us to this point. For me it was wanting to see strange new worlds -- or in my case, old worlds." She smiled. "Well, I for one am very glad you came to this place. How did Frost put it...
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
It seems fitting."
"Well," He said closing the book, now light blue in colour. "That path is certainly looking good so far." He leaned over and kissed her, making sure not to rush the moment.
Without breaking the kiss, Sam took the book out of his hand and set it down gently on the couch next to her. She didn't want the book to become a distraction.
It went on like this for several minutes until finally Damon pulled away to get a good look at her. It was almost overwhelming how strong his emotions were, certainly like nothing he had felt before. He gently swept a loose strand of hair away from her face and tucked it behind her ear. "How do I deserve you?" He said with a questioning look on his features.
She sat there for a moment, her eyes still closed. She never knew that loving someone could make her heart feel like it was going to burst. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then shook her head. "I'm the lucky one. I never thought I'd meet someone as wonderful as you. Guys like you don't usually pay attention to geeks like me," she admitted.
He chuckled softly as he leaned in again. "Well, I'm not really sure what a 'guy like me' is. But I can tell you that most guys search their entire lifetimes to find someone like you."
She kissed him gently for a minute before replying. "I think I'm the lucky one." She gently caressed his cheek. "But I'm not going to argue with you."
"Well that's a relief, I haven't won an argument with you to date." He said jokingly.
That made Sam laugh merrily. "I promise to do better!" She gave him another kiss before she picked up the book and put it back on the bookshelf. "Well, my love," she said, plopping back onto the couch, "I owe you for helping me move in. What would you like in return?" Before he could reply she leaned close. "I know that's not why you helped, but I would like to do something to show my gratitude."
"Gratitude sounds good." He gave her an alluring smile "I might have something in mind."
She gently rubbed her nose against his. "So might I. I wonder if we're thinking the same thing?"
"That is a possibility." He said as he put his hand on her thigh. "Of course, you could always read my mind and find out for sure." He gave her a soft kiss.
"Oh, I could, but where would the fun be in that?" she teased. She gently ran her fingers down the side of his neck and across his shoulder. Then she kissed him back, just as softly.
"Well then, it seems you will just have to guess." He held himself back, mere centimeters from her face. At this point it was akin to an exercise in will power.
Chuckling softly, she began to kiss him: light, fleeting kisses that barely touched his lips. Then she brushed her lips against his, soft as a whisper.
Damon didn't rush her, letting her control the pace. He ran his hand over her leg and closed his eyes. He could feel himself falling into her, moving slowly closer. All of the day's stresses seemed to evaporate in the tender moments. Where his mind was flooded with thoughts only one remained, her. "I love you." He breathed.
Her lips parted in a sigh of pleasure at his touch. "I love you, too," she whispered softly. She normally spoke without an accent, but sometimes, especially when her emotions got the better of her -- like now -- she slipped into her mother's native tongue. She caressed his shoulders before wrapping her arms around his neck as she began to press soft kisses on his lips, punctuating each one with a short phrase. "Te amo. Te adoro. Te quiero. Eres mi corazn y mi vida."
He really had no idea what she was saying, but it sounded beautiful coming from her lips. He had always regretted not learning another language and right now it became painfully obvious that he was missing out.
The kisses started coming faster and more intense. He placed his other hand on her back leaned forwards with his body, the momentum of which started pushing her back on to the couch. He never left her tight embrace as he lay her down.
Perhaps today he would start learning Spanish...
