750 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: What Lies Beneath?
Location: Suzette's Quarters
Timeline: Current

Lorne sighed, as he walked up to Suzette's quarters. He pondered what it was about the woman that...

intrigued him so much.

He couldn't not think about her, and it was more than her being only 2 dimensional.

He stopped outside her quarters for perhaps, the dozenth time, over the past half hour. This time, he decided, he was going to actually push the doorbell.

Except he couldn't do it. So he walked towards the turbolift again.

And again, he stopped at the doors, looked inside the vacant lift, and turned around.

There had been an Ensign in the lift tube once. That was akward.

He walked back to Suzette's quarters, and pressed the doorbell... accidentally. With his sleeve.

Crap! What do I say now? He thought to himself, and let his mind run with that chain of thought.

Suzette was sitting on her sofa reading a book. The chime startled her. No one ever came to her door. Ever. She set the PADD down and walked to the door, opening it.

"Lieutenant!" she said, surprised. "Is there something you need?" Maybe he had some questions about the incident in the lounge?

"Uhm... well... that is to say... uhm..." Lorne stuttered. "Uh. Hmmm. Wow. I had something for a minute there, and I lost it. I was going to... ask you something... but I completely... forgot."

Suzette bent her head to one side and gave him an odd look. He forgot?

He cleared his throat. "I'm sorry. I'm not usually this... discombobulated... I just..."

Hell with it. Just tell her, you idiot. He thought to himself.

"I just can't stop thinking about you." He finished in a quiet voice.

For one brief moment a stunned expression crossed her face. Then she recovered and regained her usual placid expression. He hadn't meant what it sounded like he meant. She had to be mistaken.

"I have that effect on people. They find me... odd. How can I exist in this world? Sometimes they ask. The answer is, I don't know. I just do." Now that he got his answer, he would leave, like everyone else.

"That's not what I meant. I meant... I couldn't stop thinking about you as a fascinating individual, not as a two dimensional odd visitor to this universe." Lorne clarified. "I... can't get you out of my head."

Suzette looked at him, reading his face. She wanted to be sure. This was so totally new to her. Then, satisfied, she smiled. "Would you like to come in?"

Lorne looked past her, into her quarters.

He was very quickly very disoriented. "Uh... can a three dimensional person even... go in there?'

"Of course. It's done with holoemitters. It makes me feel less -- out of place. But you'll be fine," she assured him

"Uhm... okay." Lorne said, as he stepped inside, with the woman.

It was strange seeing the Lieutenant go flat as he walked through the door, almost as if he'd gone through some sort of wringer. Suzette tried not to giggle as she led the way to her sofa. "Have a seat. I'd offer you a drink, but I'm not sure how you'd react to it at the moment."

"I'll pass, thanks." He said with a laugh.

She looked a bit awkward as she sat down, not quite sure what to do or say. She twisted at the waist and looked at Lorne. "I don't know what to say." She blushed at her own honestly. She hadn't meant to tell him that, true as it was.

Lorne smiled. "Me either. That's why I've been pacing your hallway for the past half hour"

"You have?" That surprised her. He didn't seem the type to be indecisive. "Then we are both in trouble, are we not?"

Lorne laughed. "I suppose so. It's not normally my thing to do. Not know what to say. I just haven't come across anyone who so forcefully attracted my attention, and thought process in...some time."

"At least this time I didn't set of a grenade in the lounge." She was pretty sure it was her attempt to escape the dog that caught his attention. Her mind quickly reviewed what he'd just said. "Why?"

Lorne shook his head. "I'm the last person you should ask about my psyche."

"Why? Don't you know yourself?" she asked, mildly surprised.
