[Exam Room 3]
John came to the exam in his workout clothing. He figured it would be easier to do the physical before the shift and in comfortable clothing. He looked about for the medical staff.
"Hello?" he said.
"Follow me to exam room three," the nurse guided the Marine Commanding Officer. "Have a seat and the doctor will be with you, sir."
John smiled and nodded to the nurse and followed them into the exam room.
The doctor came quickly as the nurse signaled for the exam room. "Hello, I'm Doctor Dwight McCabe. You are...?"
"I'm Major John Kayhill", John replied. "I am the Marine CO. How are you today doctor?"
"Nice to meet you, John. I am good and what about you?"
"Well, I am upright and breathing", John replied. "Which they tell me are both good signs. No pain, no aches."
He smiled. "That's good. How about laying back and let me scan you. So, tell me," Dwight decided to make a conversation to get to know all officers, to make acquaintance, assuming that he might work with one during an away team mission. "Where you from?"
"Originally I am from Tanya colony, but moved to earth when I was ten", he replied with a bit of a sigh.
"I take it isn't a pleasant childhood experience?" He started scanning which took him less than five minutes, then put away the instrument on a nearby table. "Any questions you'd like to ask me?"
"Not particularly", John said. "beyond the obvious, anything wrong?"
"Nope. There is nothing wrong," the doctor said, giving a short smile. "I just like to get to know people that I have never met before or know so little about...if there is a history behind that personality, nothing more. Maybe stories of away missions. I won't keep you as you are free to go in good health."
"Thank you doctor", John said. "My stories are best told in the lounge. If you are ever there when I am, pull up a seat and I will be happy to indulge."
"I will take you up on that offer!" Dwight smiled. He let out a yawn as he watched him leave the exam room before he went to the next patient.
[Examine Room #1 - New Marine]
The door to sickbay opened and an ever-so-slightly pudgy Marine with thinning hair walked in, rubbing his hands together. "Hello, hello. I hear the doctor is doing Marine physicals. Where do I sign up?"
At a desk near the front entrance, a nurse raised her PADD to glance at the list of crewmembers in the Marine Department. "The list has already been made. No need to sign up. And you are...?"
"Bosley. Tom Bosley." He smiled. "Staff Sergeant."
"Yes, I now see you on the list, sir." The nurse stood up. "Follow me," she turned and walked with the PADD in her hand. As soon as they got to a curtain area, she pulled it open. "Have a seat and the doctor will be in with you.
"Thank you, my dear." Tom sat on the biobed and looked around while he waited for the doctor.
Two minutes went by, Doctor McCabe entered the area with the PADD that was given to him by the nurse. "Staff Sergeant Tom Bosley," his Irish accent sounded. "I'm the Chief Medical Officer, Dwight McCabe." He set the instrument down and picked up the tricorder that was already prepared on the metal tray beside the biobed. "How do you do?"
"Hi, Doc." Bosley smiled. "I'm good--mostly good. A little heartburn, but nothing to complain about."
"Hello. I don't brush away a minor problem. Let's take a look at that heartburn that you are having," the doctor opened the tricorder and started the scans. "Tell me when you started having that? Do you eat spicy foods?"
"I can't remember when I started having trouble," Bosley admitted. "I thought it came with the job." He chuckled. "I don't like spicy foods. I'm a meat-and-potatoes man."
After the instrument beeped, he nodded his head as he read the diagnosis. "Good news. I see the problem as you have some irritation to the lining of your stomach. The intrinsic factor is a little off causing some of your problems. Just one medicine for two days will fix it and you need to eat bland foods for about three days. Can you do that?"
"Bland foods? But that takes all the fun out of eating." Tom sighed. "All right. I got through boot camp, I can get through this." He chuckled, then paused and grinned. "Hey, potatoes are bland. So's bread and bread pudding. This might not be so bad after all."
Dwight gave him an injection to his neck after setting up the medication dose. "Come back tomorrow for the second dose and you will be all set with no more medications. You will need to come back in a week so I can check the stomach to see if the medication has reversed it, Mister Bosley. This won't hurt your physical records as a marine...be good as new."
Bosley got off the biobed and rubbed his hands together. "Great news. Thanks doc. I'll see you tomorrow." He might have to see this doctor on a regular basis. Wouldn't hurt at all to get into shape again.
