Mission:
Food for the Gods
Location: Marine Barracks
John shook his head as he walked out of the shuttlebay. The individual whom he had rode in with was a bit 'odd'. Then again, the man had been nervous. Regardless it didn't matter. John was back with a unit and back to being a real Marine again. If he never had to have a desk again, he wouldn't complain.
Smiling, he headed to the Marine barracks. He knew if he moved along quickly, he'd get to get a peek in before going to see the CO. He pressed the wall map and saw where he needed to go.
When he came into the barracks, he could hear a commotion going on. There was a fair amount of cursing and banging.
'Damn', he thought.
He was going to be late meeting the Commodore. He hated being late.
Going to the sound, he stood at the door of the weight room where a human and an Andorian were fighting. The human had a bloody nose and the Andorian was showing a swelling eye. There were a few more marines watching and cheering the two combatants on.
"I've told you a million times pink skin, clean your weights before you leave", the Andorian growled.
"I did Little Boy Blue", the other snapped.
"Then why is it wet still?" the Andorian asked sarcastically before launching into another flurry of swings.
"Stifle it, Marines!" Kara said, wading into the fray. "KP for both of you. Now, fight's over."
John smirked as the woman moved in, obviously someone who had some respect around here.
"And as we don't want too many cooks in the kitchen, the rest of you who decided just to watch your team beat each other to a pulp, have cleaning detail", John chimed in.
"I have toothbrushes," Kara added. Then she turned around and saw his rank. "Sir," she added, snapping to attention.
He looked at her and said, "Come with me."
She nodded, not sure how much trouble she was about to get in for letting the fight happen in the first place--even if she hadn't been around to see it.
He looked at the rest of them and said, "For you guys, before cleaning details, until she gets back or I get tired, pushups."
There were numerous groans as he led Melo out of the gym. As they moved along to where he knew his office was, he said, "Major John Kayhill. Sorry I spoke up when you were dealing with our gladiators, but the spectators looked like they were having too much fun."
Kara sighed. "No worries, sir. They're getting a little antsy right now. Two of the fleeties went missing and they want to go search, but it's a pre-warp civilization and the Commodore sent intel down instead. So, they're letting off a little steam. They know fighting isn't allowed. If York saw them, she'd probably have them replacing light bulbs. She's married to a Marine Colonel." She glanced at the Major. "I'm Kara Melo, Alpha Plattoon Leader."
John took it all in and then replied, "Ok, so I have a meeting with the Commodore in just a little bit. In the mean time, if you haven't already, prep a S&R team, 4 standard and 2 corpsmen, and have them on standby just in case Intel can't handle this. I will get us more information from the Commodore."
Kara nodded. "Yes, sir. Is there anything else you need?"
John thought a moment and looked at her intently and said, "A company XO. Know of anyone in the platoons who would be good in that role?"
"Have a look at the platoon leaders first. They're the most experienced. After that, go with your gut," she said.
"Very well", John said. "I like the way you handled the situation back there. You are company XO. Inspection is at 0600 tomorrow, barring any sort of mission from the Commodore."
Kara blinked. She hadn't expected that. But, she knew better than to say anything. "Yes, sir. They'll be ready."
"Of that, I have no doubt", John said with a smile. "Unless you have anything else, I better not keep the Commodore waiting."
"Nothing, sir." Kara inclined her head. "Welcome aboard."
"Thank you Lieutenant", John said, putting his bag down on the inside of his office door. "I will let you know what I hear from the CO shortly. Dismissed."
