Nhallia rocked. Her eyes gazed dreamily down at the perfect bundle in her arms as her daughter nursed and a smile played her lips. The baby was slowing, her hunger mostly sated, now she was just soothing herself into sleep, if she followed her pattern of the past few days. It amazed Nhallia that she was already tuning into the patterns, the rhythm, of this new life. She cradled her baby, her daughter, and almost cried at the pure joy and peace she swept over her.
And she rocked gently, locked away in her own little world with only this one other person in it. Knowing that they were leaving in a few days, that even in a few minutes she was expected in the other room, none of that mattered. All that mattered right now was this.
"It is almost time." Newmark poked his head in. "I will get the transmission started you two come when you are ready, Love." He winked and darted out the doorway.
"Mmm hmm," Nhallia agreed distractedly. "We're almost done. Almost nap time," she added softly, almost singing the words. "Isn't it, my Little Love?"
Newmark was making the Sub-Space connections to the USS Calypso ; currently orbiting Vulcan, he knew that Stevie and Kit would be biting at the bit. The baby was a content little one; Nhallia had taken to the baby at first sight; taking a load off Newmark's mind actually. There were months of his beloved wondering if she could be a mother; that her own Mother's example was so bad that it made his wife doubt her own possibility of being a mother.
Ol' Doc was right, the instant Nhallia saw her child the bond was set and nothing could have been more perfect. Of course Newmark getting time with his daughter did seem to be more difficult, but he was not a greedy Father; his time would come as needed and Nhallia did like to go into the surf a little now, easing herself back towards the Surfboards again. Too bad it would not be here on their beach house on Risa.
Nhallia wrapped up in the soft house-coat she wore most often right now, soft and loose enough to tuck baby in right next to her skin, and perfectly light for the warm Risan weather. Then she bundled her daughter in a light blanket and brought her downstairs to the viewscreen. "Hello there, Baba. Are we almost ready?" she asked, still mostly looking down at her arms.
"Are you saying we as in us, Maisha, or you and the baby?" Newmark asked.
Nhallia laughed and little. "We as in ALL if us, silly Baba," she teased, and she leaned in to give him a light kiss and a little bit of a snuggle into him. She couldn't exactly give him a true hug, since her arms were a bit full at the moment, but she leaned into him for a bit of physical contact, sheltering their daughter between them.
"Okay I will let it slide this time." He winked. "Even though for the time being you do get a better excuse to cuddle her with the whole feeding thing." He teased lightly and glanced at the screen and moved a comfortable chair for her. "The connection should come through any time now."
Settling in, Nhallia leaned back into the chair with a smile. "Ready for Stevie to squeal? You know she'll go gaga," she asked and adjusted her seat to give a clear view immediately of the baby.
"I'll take your word for it." Newmark took his chair..
The moment the viewscreen activated, Kit started a greeting but was drowned out by Stevie. "Oh, she's perfect!" Stevie cooed, crossing her hands over her heart and leaning forward for a better look. "So adorable, look at those little cheeks and her bitty little hands..."
"Take a close look." He smiled. "Piano fingers of her mother."
Nhallia gently held up the tiny hand and spread the fingers so they could see the five perfect digits. "My hands maybe, but she'll have her Baba's touch, Doc says," Nhallia beamed proudly.
"Then we'll have to get her started on an instrument right away," Kit said with a smile. "I'll see if I can shrink a violin down that small."
Stevie laughed. "She's just perfect as she is, no matter what she plays. Oh, Nhallia, Doc, I don't know how you can stand it- look how sweet she is. Just a little bugoboo, sweetie-pie, wook at dat widdle face and da footsies and her bitty-boo earses...."
Kit rolled her eyes and gave Stevie a little push. "Since I assume we are not in fact going to be calling her 'Bugaboo Sweetie-pie'... what are we calling her?" she asked.
Nhallia looked over at Verdeth. "Do you want to introduce her, Baba?" she offered.
"Aurea Matumeini Newmark." He introduced.
Kit, the most musically educated of the trio, smiled. "Aurea, 'gentle music', beautiful. And so fitting for you two. What's the middle name? Matumeini? Risan? Or Nuvian?" she asked Newmark.
"It is Nuvian for Hope." Newmark replied with some pride. "Mother was almost at tears when it was entered." He shrugged. "I think her name flows rather well. As for anything else; I think she has potential to be a talented speaker, she has strong lungs and can project her voice quite loudly when she wants something."
Stevie laughed. "They can ALL do that! Teach her to stay in tune, and we'll have some progress."
Nhallia smiled and snuggled Aurea gently. "For now at least, she has few demands."
"And nothing Mommy and Daddy can't provide," Kit pointed out.
"Maisha and Baba," Nhallia corrected as she caressed her daughter's cheek. "Nuvian again."
Stevie looked at her a little blankly. "Ok. But, uh... Nhallia, you don't speak Nuvian. And I wasn't aware that Doc was fluent in it, either. So... why?" she asked a little bluntly, but not meant to be unkind, just trying to understand.
