Sam and Damon beamed down to a side street and walked to T'ala's office. She was busy, so they took a seat and waited.

After a quarter of an hour, a young Vulcan male came to the door. "Commodore York and Colonel Raine, T'ala will see you now."

Sam glanced at Damon and stood, following the Vulcan into a spartan office. She bowed to T'ala. "Greetings, T'ala. I wish we were meeting under more friendly circumstances. May I introduce my husband, Colonel Damon Raine."

T'ala bowed. "I offer my congratulations to you both. I hope you have much joy in your union." Then she turned her attention to Sam. "Samantha, I, too, would wish the circumstances were different. Please, take a seat."

"As do I," Sam replied.

When they were seated, T'ala began. "Ever since the move towards reunification began, there have been dissenters. We are not unfamiliar with this as we have had some small factions that opposed changes in the past. But it has been many years, and some believe we have been slow to take action. I had hoped, before now, that the protests were over and the Vulcan people were ready to reunify with our ancient brothers, or as many as wished to come back." She waved a hand in the direction of the park. "The events of today events have given lie to our hopes."

"What exactly happened?" Sam asked.

"An explosive device was placed inside the base of a statue to Ambassador Spock. Your officer was unfortunate enough to have been within the blast radius when it detonated. We do not believe she was the target. Rather, we believe destroying the statue was the end goal."

"If there is less opposition to reunification, why do you think someone is trying to stir things up?" Sam asked.

"That we do not know. Nor do we know if the attack was made by Vulcans. All we know is that it happened," T'ala said. "We are investigating, but there are those who would prefer we ignore the attack and pretend it did not happen."

Sam nodded. "Is the Federation going to investigate?"

"Not unless there is evidence that the attack was meant to harm your officer. They will not interfere in Vulcan law," T'ala replied.

"And that's why you asked what you did," Sam said. "I understand. I've already asked some of my people to do what they can. If we find anything I'll let you know."

"That is much appreciated," T'ala said. "And your officer, how is she?"

"She is in surgery right now, but I have a good medical team and she should recover."

"It is my understanding that she was here to meet her husband," T'ala said. She would not come right out and mention Pon'Farr.

"Yes, although I haven't spoken to him." Sam glanced at Damon. "I should talk to him next."

"Indeed. I believe he is a Starfleet officer." T'ala slipped a small chip to Sam.

Sam took the chip and put it in her pocket. "Thank you. I should have information on him in the ship's computer. I'm sure he'll want to know what happened."

There was a discreet knock on the door and T'ala stood. "I'm afraid I have another appointment. Please, keep me apprised of your findings."

Sam and Damon stood. "We will. Thank you."

The door opened and T'ala's aide bowed. "I apologize for the interruption, but that is all the time I could give you."

"It's fine. Thank you." Sam bowed.

When she and Damon were outside, she slipped her hand in his. "I know this little restaurant not far from here. Come on, I'll treat you to lunch."
