Rroden, the head of the Jenefran Security Force, had reluctantly agreed to take the Starfleet security personnel on a brief tour of his offices and assure them that he did, indeed, have the King and his council well guarded.
He chose to meet them in the reception area, where they had arrived the night before, to tour the palace.
Beaming down to the rendezvous point a little early, Cam was making discrete observations of the surrounding area as well as the movements of the people. Despite last nights dinner, he still wasn't happy sending officers down here without a full marine escort, but the Commodore had made her decision and so he had to find a way to work with the boundaries set by Sam.
Damion stood in the reception area already, Ensign Sirel by his side. As soon as he saw Cam, he gave him a nod and crossed his arms over his chest. "Bourne." He said as he raised his hand and gestured him to come closer.
Remy looked over to Cam, than back to Damion. "Is it really necessary for the Marine's to be here?"
"Yes." Damion replied softly. "They are considered part of the security force that keeps the ship protected, as well as members of the Marine force that represents Starfleet and the Federation. Besides. I would be nice to have a set of eyes that isn't at waist level."
"You'll forgive me if I don't laugh." Remy replied sarcastically
Rroden bowed to the officers. "Welcome. I am Rroden, head of the Jenefran Security Force. If you will follow me, I will show you our main offices."
"Sorry I'm late," Kara said, joining the others. "Cam, there's a problem you need to deal with. I'll take over here."
When he beamed out, she turned to the others. "Hi, I'm Kara Melo."
Rroden nodded acknowledgement, but said nothing. He led them around to a side corridor and behind the High Council room to a small series of rooms. One held a monitor that kept an eye on the council room and the throne room. Others showed the grounds.
"You have a good set up here, Rroden," Carlos said. "I've noticed a few blind spots, but they're mostly unavoidable. You'd have to know where they are to exploit them. I'm assuming during off hours the building is covered by patrols and internal sensors of some kind. Perhaps motion detectors?"
"We do not have motion detectors, but we do have dogs that patrol the grounds at night," Rroden said. "And there are guards posted throughout the palace."
"Do the guards do their rounds at regular intervals, or do you alter the times of the patrols?" Kara asked.
"We are very punctual," Rroden said, a little stiffly.
"I apologize for not being clear," Kara replied hastily. "I did not mean any offense. We have learned that if your guards are too predictable, it is easy to slip by them unnoticed. If your enemies do not know when your guards will pass by, it makes it harder for them to plan an attack."
"Ah," he said, "That has never been an issue, but I will bring it up."
Carlos raised a slanted eyebrow and smiled at the idea of sentient felinoids using domesticated canines as working animals. Were canines also used as pets on this planet? The canines must be terribly embarrassed. Interesting that the felinoid race on Jenefra had evolved into sentient beings while the canines had not. But that was besides the point. The commodore's instructions were to discretely inquire into the security situation on Jenefra. Carlos wasn't as skilled an interviewer as his father but he had picked up a thing or two.
"What kinds of security concerns do your forces have?" he asked Rroden. "If you don't mind my asking, that is."
"Recently? Not much," Rroden said. "We had a servant steal some mementos of our former Queen, but he was caught and prosecuted. Before that, there was an attempted assassination, but that was 122 years ago." He shrugged. "As I said, there is not much, but we do not want to rest on our record, either."
"I'm curious." Damion said firmly, looking over to Carlos before focusing back on Rroden. "Not to draw attention away from the attempted assassination, but what happened to the man you caught and prosecuted? Was he imprisoned?"
"He was banished," Rroden said, equally firmly. "He went into Qunari territory and we have no idea what happened to him. All that matters is he did not return."
"How long ago was this?" Kara asked.
"Two years ago," Rroden replied. "Queen Catanna died a little over two years ago. Brawlar wanted something of her to keep as a memento. Unfortunately, he close to steal one from the Palace."
"Is banishment a common punishment here?" Carlos asked.
Damion looked over to Carlos, raising a brow slightly. "Well it's not uncommon. In our own history, banishment was very common. It was less seen as a punishment and more as a means of disgrace. Here, I think it serves as something a bit different." He paused slightly, looking over to Rroden before looking back to Carlos. "Imagine living in a fortress your entire life constantly being told that beyond the walls that protect you are dangers and enemies you can't imagine. In a situation like that, and like this, its seen more as a death sentence and less as a dishonor."
