Frenatus stood on his balcony overlooking the village of Pandera. The morning was cool with a soft breeze blowing off the sea a short distance away. His gaze moved from the village to where the faint shimmer of the sea could be seen dancing above the horizon in the early morning dawn. There would be rain, but not yet. For now, the day would be clear and warm, perfect for harvesting his crops. Or, rather, for his subjects to harvest his crops. By the smell of them, the crops were ready. After morning prayers, he would instruct the people on how to properly harvest his grain.
A deep gong rang through the valley, signaling time for morning prayer. Frenatus watched the lights in the village indicate that his people would shortly leave their houses and make their way to his temple. Good. Disobedience made him angry.
He mentally noted how long it took them to get up and out. He smiled as the first villager appeared. They were moving faster, this was a good indication of their increased loyalty. An acolyte paused in the balcony entrance. "My lord, it is time for morning prayers."
Frenatus turned, his hand raising towards the acolyte. A bolt of electricity hit him, knocking him to the ground. "I see that, fool." Frenautus had been very clear that no one was to enter his personal chambers without permission. To enter and then accost him on his balcony was unforgivable.
He stepped over the body and into his chambers. That was the third acolyte this month. The villagers were learning their duties, unfortunately he could not say the same for his acolytes. He carefully dressed in his gold robes and placed a wreath of laurels on his head. He must dress properly to greet his subjects and to lead them in the morning prayers.
A long, ornate mirror stood against one wall and he carefully checked his appearance. A buzzing at the back of his mind caused him to stop and turn around. No, there was no one else here. The feeling came again and he knew. Someone else was here. Not on the planet, but in this system. HIS system. he could not allow them to interfere, not here.
He turned and descended the stairs to the temple. Morning prayers first, then he would decide what to do with the intruders. They would come, they always did. This time, however, he would be ready.
