Mission: The Devils Snare
Location: Planetside
Timeline: One day after hopper crash

Damon and Samantha slipped back into the hopper. Sam felt much better now that she was clean. She needed to get into the emergency food supplies so she could make breakfast. She pulled out some flour and other ingredients to make Navajo fry bread.

Damon felt surprisingly better after the morning's activities. It was amazing how feeling fresh improved ones outlook, despite trying situations. He was quick to get back to work once inside the hopper. A few minutes were spent talking to some of the injured followed by him doing an active inventory of all the supplies.

"Are you ready for breakfast?" Sam asked after she'd done a quick check of the injured.

"Absolutely, Iâ€™m famished." He stuffed some loose bags back into the storage rack and followed her out.

"Good. I'll have something ready soon," she told him, smiling. "I'd appreciate some company."

Sam made Damon her official taster. When the first batch was ready, Sam took it inside the hopper and gave it to Sergeant Riley to distribute. Then she made another batch for the rest of the crew. She used the hot water to make a large tub of coffee.

When breakfast was cleaned up, Sam called a meeting in the hopper.

"I don't know how long we're going to be here, but there are several things we need to get working on. First, Lieutenant Damon Raine is second in command. If I'm not around, he's the person to go to." She didn't tell Damon she was going to do this, as she didn't want him to defer to one of the 'Fleeties,' but Damon was the best person for the job and she trusted him completely.

"Second," she continued, "We need to find whatever it is that's causing the power to fail. If we can find it and disable it, we can contact the Orion and get beamed back. In the meantime, we need to find food and water to keep us alive. Alex, see if you can jerry rig any power for the hopper. Communications first. Replicator if we can't find enough food."

"Doctor, is there anything you need to treat the wounded?"

"No, we have plenty for now. Like you say, food and water for survival...the important thing right now," Leanne said as she rubbed her forehead. Headache, maybe I need food in my stomach.

"There are fish in the river. I don't know if they're edible yet, but it's worth investigating," Sam added, smiling as she recalled how she learned about the fish.

"Damon, the Marines can hunt for food and guard the camp. Is there anything else you want them to do?"

Damon pointed through the trees to the only point higher than the brush. "Those hills over there rise far above the canopy. I'd like a team to scout them out, get some eyes as to what's around here."

"I agree. We need to find better shelter, too, if we're going to stuck here for any length of time," Sam added.

Damon simply nodded. By training he was a scout, but with this blasted injury there was no way he could get the doctor to sign off on letting him take out a scouting group. It was frustrating for him to be held back, as if on a leash.

"I'm going to see if I can find what's causing the power drain." Sam wasn't sure, yet, who she'd take with her, but she wanted to be part of that group.

She turned to the Cardassian. "J'trey, do you want to be in charge of guarding the wounded in the hopper?"

Bak'ten sat up, nursing his arm. "If it'll help." He said quietly.

"It will help. I can have the marines in charge of security outside and you in charge of security inside," Sam replied.

As the meeting broke up, a Marine came running in. "Six civilians are heading this way. Humanoid."
