585 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Location: Sickbay, USS Calypso

Vance immediately left the bridge and took the turbolift to sickbay ignoring any greeting and individuals along the way.

Upon entering sickbay she searched for the Chief Medical Officer. "Commander Bowen, I require your assistance immediately." she called out.

The doctor heard her and wondering for the brunt demand in her voice. One look at her, she doesn't recognize her face or have seen the person before. Is she a new crewmember here? "I can help you...so, what's the problem?"

"I am Commander Alexandra Vance, Executive Officer. The Commanding Officer has ordered you to perform a medical scan on me to determine if I have any ailments." she said

"Come have a seat...," Leanne said.

Alexandra took a seat as the doctor requested and looked to her for the next command.

With her usual smile, she picked up a medical tricorder and opened it. She approached the woman and started the scans immediately, assuming that she needed to get back to duty right away. "Nice to meet you, Commander. I'm Lieutenant Commander Leanne Bowen, Chief Medical Officer. I'm glad to hear that we have a new executive officer after that position has been vacant for awhile. So, where did you come from?"

"My former designation was Commanding Officer of the USS Niagara, registry number N C C eight, zero, four, eight, five, B." Vance replied.

"Oh," she responded. After the instrument beeped, she glanced at it to see what the prognosis is. "Well, my scans are showing that you have an elevated body temperature plus your heart rate has increased. Are you feeling okay? Any symptoms?"

"I am functioning within normal parameters." Vance replied.

Leanne frowned at the response, wondering if she was applying a joke. "Looks to me like you are coming down with something like the flu. I will have to do more tests to see the full picture," she closed the tricorder and set it aside. "You must have something else...headache? Achyness?"

"Negative Doctor, I am functioning within normal parameters." Vance replied emotionlessly once again.

Seeing that this officer appears to show no emotions, she glanced at her profile in the database to see if she was fully human. One hundred percent human. She finds that her personality appears to not be normal. Leanne may not be a psychiatrist, but she has some skills that allows her to make some judgement if it appears to be medical related. She picked up the hypospray, "Okay, I'm going to take some of your blood to test it."

Vance held out her arm. "Proceed."

She withdrew her blood with the hypospray and removed the vial that contained her blood. "I'll be right back," the doctor said. As soon as she went into her laboratory, the color of the woman's blood gave her a concern.

The doctor came back, "It looks more like a little too much iron in your blood." She picked up the tricorder to go back to the vitals again, looking for clues. "I can't find the cause of this, but I have narrowed it down to the flu. I'm going to give you an anti-viral medication and will suggest you take it easy for your duty as the executive."

"Your terms are acceptable. Have you completed your examination?" Vance asked.

"It has been awhile, why?"

"I must return to my duties immediately."

"Ok," she frowned a little, but dismissed her emotion. "If you have any problems, let me know." The doctor watched the Commander leave sickbay.
