Physical Description | Her skin is purple in color. Her body seems rather thin; if she were human it would be assumed that she suffered a great deal of malnutrition and her growth has been stunted. Despite that, she does seem rather strong for her size. In the place of head hair, she possess semi-flexible, cartilage based scalp crests that grow into shape. These structures are rigid, and do not "flop around" as their appearance might seem to indicate they might. She has facial markings that are a deeper purple than her skin. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Calisa is a strong woman. Despite past traumas (or perhaps because of them) she does not have a marred outlook on life. For her, every experience is a new beginning, a chance to start over and not let past failures discourage her from trying over. That is not to say that she doesn't learn from her mistakes or remember the lessons - quite the opposite. She simply has been taught that not everyone can win, and not every failure is a result of doing something wrong. She also prefers to solve things in a non-violent fashion, though she has earned the respect of several more violently inclined races by the fact that she is not afraid to throw down with them if the negotiation comes to that. Despite having hand-to-hand training, and being strong for her apparent size, she doesn't possess the strength that most of those violent races do, and doesn't often win. However, the fact that she's not afraid to step up to the fight (despite her slow metabolism slowing her healing) has earned her at least the respect of other races. |

Personal History | Up until the age of 17, little is known about Calisa, save for some recounts from the Camli and some fractured stories that seem to be from different books of people's past. The Calmi in her home village say that around the age of 12 (Terran years), she was traded to some 'outsiders from the stars' with advanced weaponry. They had asked for her specifically, though they didn't reveal the reason. The actions of the Camli were not without heart, however. Despite taking Calisa away from her parents (who had attempted to flee with her and were executed for treason because of it), they had reason to do so. The village was on the brink of starvation, and they were offered a hefty sum in both food and seed (enough to feed the village and plant their entire next crop). While the leaders were reluctant to do such a thing at first (not sure that the outsiders would come through on their end of the bargain), not only was it made clear that 'no harm' would come to Calisa, but that if they didn't agree, they'd take her by force and wipe out the people. Having seen what seemed to be vastly superior weapons and equipment, her people surrendered Calisa to the outsiders in exchange for the lives of everyone else. The outsiders came through on their end of the deal and gave their payment, plus a bonus for being so agreeable, to her people and left the planet, never to return. Arriving at a research lab, shielded and hidden underground, on an uninhabited planet, the experiments on Calisa began. (Scans had been run on the population to know that she was the most likely to be able to meet their end goals.) After 3 years and many painful attempts, they finally managed to figure out how to lighten the facial markings on her and were very close to figuring out how to weaponize her abilities. When her facial markings were completely removed by use of a special 'crown', things became very unstable. Not only did it stop what was suppressing her mind, it also amplified her abilities. Her mind lashed out at everyone in the immediate area, absorbing the minds of those around her and rendering her unconscious. She remained unconscious for nearly two days while her mind attempted to cope with the new personalities and ended up 'killing off' some of the more dominant ones, although she was still left with some of their skills. She retains some of these abilities, though she uses on pure instinct, and often cannot replicate them when she is no longer acting on instinct. She was left alone in this research lab for nearly two years after that, not having the courage to venture out on her own. While the USS T'Kumbra was surveying the mountains of a seemingly abandoned planet, the surveying team stumbled upon a small cave complex. There were anomalies in the readings that couldn't be accounted for by the normal thresholds for error, so a team was sent to further investigate. What the team found was so out of place for this area, the only logical reason for it being here they could conclude was the lab was used for things the federation would frown upon - and studying the lab would prove their initial conclusion right. The team explored the lab, discovering Calisa in a back corner. They called out and tried to get her attention to explain this place, but she would not respond. It was not until a member of the team, one named T'Pral, approached and touched her arm that did anything happen. The Vulcan passed out from the unexpected mental overload, and immediately Calisa was more responsive. The reaction was not a hostile act, but an instinctive defense mechanism. Calisa was secured and brought aboard for further inquiry as she was the most logical source of any answers. T'Pral regained consciousness shortly thereafter, at which point she took charge of the questioning. Calisa was silent and resistant to any attempt of the other Vulcans to speak to her, but once T'Pral arrived, her demeanor took a 180. She was now speaking, and the first words were a sort of apology to her. Over the next few days, with the help of T'Pral, they managed to piece together what happened at the facility. Over time, Calisa was granted limited access to the ship. She tended to stick close to T'Pral, as the imprint required. She learned as much as the Vulcan woman was able to teach her, including ways to suppress her often confusing and contradictory emotions. She didn't have Vulcan discipline, but some of the techniques were helpful to some degree. Once her mind was calmed, she managed to give them the location of her homeworld, and the T'Kumbra set about returning her to her people. They hit a snag, and one that though the crew did not agree with, they understood. The Camli were fearful of getting Calisa back, stating that if the 'outsiders' that took her were to return, they may demand their payment back or worse. It was during these talks, they discovered that Calisa's act of suppressing her emotions was very atypical of her people, and likely something she had picked up from her time spent among the Vulcans. In the end, the Camli released Calisa to the Vulcans and they were tasked with finding something to do with her. However, the exact details would have to wait, as the ship was called to deal with some important matters. During the next month, Calisa began to find her place among the crew, helping out where she could with her limited skillset. Her ability to empathize with what was going on and determine what she should say was not lost on T'Pral, who discussed an option for Calisa that she didn't even know existed. There was no fallacy in the logic from her Vulcan friend, so the next time the ship was able, it swung by Starfleet Academy to drop off Calisa. While her entrance scores were slightly lower than Starfleet would have liked, due to the fact she didn't have much of an education herself, the recommendation of the crew she'd word with managed to get her in. Life at Starfleet was difficult at first for Calisa, though it wasn't because of the lifestyle. She had formed a bond with T'Pral that made her miss the presence of her Vulcan friend. The noise of so many emotions around was difficult for Calisa to deal with as well, and the first month was dealing with that adjustment. Realizing what her difficulties were, a Betaziod by the name of Lulli picked up in her mental training where the Vulcan's had fallen short - through no fault of their own. Schooling was difficult at times, and many of her teachers noticed her extremely fragmented knowledge. She'd be able to explain some fairly complex things, but fall short trying to explain some of the simpler ones. While it was a source of frustration for them, most simply assigned her extra tutoring to compensate for her strange learning arc. Lulli tutored her in her mental abilities all through school, and through Calisa's four years at Starfleet, the strange, and sometimes violent, personalities that surfaced in Calisa at times. She graduated doing decent in school - a solid 'B' student. When it came time to assign her go a ship, Lulli put in a recommendation to Starfleet, suggesting that she be put on the same ship that the Vulcan T'Pral was to be assigned to. While Starfleet was not sure about this recomendation at first, the reasons behind it were sound - being so close to the one she had obviously 'bonded' with (or imprinted on, as the Camli called it), would help control the girl's emotions, since the Vulcans were in great control of theirs. When assignments came out, Calisa got word that she was going to be assigned to the USS Calypso as a diplomat, not realizing that her friend would also be assigned there. *Note:* Lulli has also said that because of the experimentation on her, and the way her mind was ill-treated during it, it is unlikely she will ever be able to attain the level of mastery over her abilities that the Camli have spoken about that people like her *can* achieve. Her abilities with most people are little more than a basic empath, though those she imprints on, she can share much more: such as deep emotions and learning faster from their skillset. She still cannot actually read their thoughts without harming them, though. |
