Is fundamentally a highly intuitive and interactive computer program.
Restricted to areas with holo-emitters
Strictly governed by starfleet regulations.
She has very little real experience interacting with people, as yet.

Personal History The Mark VIII EMH usigng the ‘Medical Hologram Template’ and with the new Holo-Core technology is currently being beta-tested on top-of-the-line ships in the fleet. The EMH ‘Galen’ was active on Starbase 11 for 3 months prior to being sent to the Calypso as an upgrade to it’s current EMH Mark V system.

Technical

The EMH is a holographic computer program designed to treat patients during emergency situations, or when the regular medical staff is unavailable or incapacitated. They may also be used to assist the current medical staff, as required. EMHs are a standard feature on board all Starfleet ships, but they are there only to supplement the living medical crew, not replace it. They are programmed with all current Starfleet medical knowledge. Previous attempts to create an LMH (Long-term Medical Hologram) met with only limited success, and Starfleet focused instead on the EMH line of programs.

Unlike previous EMHs, the Mark VIIIs are installed on a separate a computer system, or ‘Holo-Core’, which is connected to but not part of the ship’s main computer. This new unit is intended to solve the problem previous versions created with their large memory requirements. A close link between the two databases enables the EMH to access any information stored in the main computer (excluding restricted files, unless authorized). Program growth and operation is maintained within the Holo-Core, where the EHM ‘lives’ and can run as many processes as are required to interact with crew members or perform tasks in the course of its duties.

All EHM programs have very sophisticated personality subroutines and protocols, which enable the crew to interact with this vital service without the feeling like they are dealing with a computer. Unlike the early versions of the EMH programs, whose appearance and personalities were modeled after real Starfleet doctors, the Federation’s top hologram designers spent years developing a new ‘Medical Hologram Template’. This template - a basic male or female persona - is the culmination of years of research and development to find the perfect balance of traits required for a medical care provider. A Mark VII EMH begins with this template, and then is augmented with several basic social-driven interests which will help it interact with the crew. A random appearance is generated for each EMH to avoid the feeling of a ‘cookie-cutter’ final product. New programs created using this template are meticulously tested before being sent for beta-testing on top-of-the-line Starfleet vessels.

The use of ‘Holo-Personnel’ is strictly regulated by the Federation. To prevent the unintentional creation of true Digital Life Forms (not unlike The Doctor, ST:VOY), and maintain the overall ‘health’ of the programs, standard maintenance and through checks or tests are routinely scheduled by Starfleet. These are typically carried out by specialized technicians who travel to the EMH’s host vessel. Since the Mark VIIIs are still in development, these technicians will need to work closely with the host ship’s engineering crew to carefully monitor the EMH.
Education Programmed knowledge.
Service Record The Mark VIIIs using the new template and Holo-Core technology are currently being beta-tested. The EMH ‘Galen’ program has not been previously installed on any other ship.
Activated on the USS Calypso on stardate
